I witnessed in a elementary school when I volunteered there, this gorgeous 23 year old teacher was teaching her class and when the students and her were sitting, she used foul language and said: “I DON’T LIKE THAT CERTAIN TEAM! THEY F*CKING SUCK SO MUCH!” And I was just in shock! I mean, I know it’s a free country and there is nothing wrong with swearing in public but at a school or even college, is this considered appropriate behavior or could a teacher be fired and lose her job just for swearing and influencing the kids that its ok to swear in school?
Answer: Its not ok to negativly influence children with foul language. I don't care what everyone's opinions are on the matter, but if you say foul language such as that, even once in front of people in school, you will most likely be suspended, if not fired. My 7th grade gym teacher, awesome gym teacher by the way, swore at a girl. What happened? He got fired and replaced. Some students protested and got suspended with no avail. Now i admit, thats 7th grade, but its different in high school. Teachers get more slack in high school, but if they swear like that in front of a high staff official, or are actively insulting a student, they will get fired.

Do you think it is OK for teachers to use the classroom as a political platform?

I am a college student in a relatively liberal city, and through the years Ive encountered several teachers who use their position in the classroom as a platform to spew their political beliefs. As a prospective teacher, Ive always found this behavior very unprofessional. I am a pretty liberal person, but I just find it so rude (and a little offensive) when my teacher babbles about 9/11 conspiracies and government corruption. See, its one thing to express your opinion--its another thing to assert it as the truth and assume others will agree with you. In another instance, I had a teacher in high school who spent nearly an entire class period ranting about his opposition to gay marriage. To me, that was downright ignorant because there could have been lgbt students in that class who were offended but too afraid to speak up because of his authority. Is this appropriate behavior in a classroom setting? If so, where do you draw the line between debate and diatribe?
Answer: no. as a high school teacher and a very political person, i'm telling you it is not okay. it's extremely unprofessional to use your position of power in the classroom to influence students politically. when you stand in front of a group of students, you are the expert by default and it's your responsibility to use that power to teach, not bash people you disagree with or brainwash people who respect you. in my room, i do the following things: whenever a politically loaded issue comes up, i step out of the spotlight and let the kids direct the conversation. if i feel one side of the issue has more support, i play the devil's advocate, regardless of my personal stance. i ask questions -- lots of them -- from both sides of every issue. i would rather have students think for themselves than nod their heads at whatever i say. because i'm an english teacher, i'm often privy to very personal issues students deal with. if i know an issue is of particular sensitivity to a student in my room (homosexuality is a good example), i avoid it all together. this is partly to protect that student's feelings and partly to protect other students from an embarrassing foot-in-mouth moment. more widespread issues (racism is one we deal with in my school a lot) we discuss with as much good humor and diplomacy as possible. again, i always ask far more than i tell and i encourage the kids to state their opinions maturely, without lapsing into bashing or diatribes.

What is an appropriate reward for good behavior for a 5 year old boy?

My little boy has been doing so well in school lately and this has been a huge improvement from just a month ago. He has a daily behavior log from the teacher and has had no "sad face" days in over 3 weeks now. We praise him verbally daily and Ive taken him to the park and McDonalds, but Id like to do a little bit more this weekend. Any ideas? These are GREAT ideas. Thanks to all of you.
Answer: Why not ask your son? I only have daughters, so I'm not sure what to reward a boy with. My daughter gets Bella Sara trading cards every day that she comes home with perfect papers.....it gives her an incentive to try her best. I would ask him what he would like. Just let him know that you think he's been doing an awesome job and would like to reward him, but you thought this time you would let him pick his own reward. It makes them feel important when you show you trust them enough to make their own decisions. Make sure to tell him to keep it within reason though! Good luck!

Is this appropriate behaviour from a violin teacher?

My daughter is eleven and since the beginning of this school year I enrolled her in violin lessons. They are at the house of her teacher, who is certified as one. He seemed quite good to me when I was researching, so I tried with him. The progress shes been making is quite good and he seems to be a good teacher. However, there is something odd which my daughter just recently told me about. When she arrives for lessons, he asks her to remove her shoes and socks and leave them at the door and to have the lesson in her bare feet. I only came in for a bit the first lesson she had where he didnt ask this. Now, she always goes in and comes out by herself. Apparently, she has to remove her shoes at the front door but when she goes into the studio (in the basement), his rule is "no socks in the studio". She only told me of her teachers request a few days ago and seems to think nothing of it. She said she asked him why the first time and he said that its better for posture and music is better played barefoot. She also said that the girl who comes before her puts her socks back on at the end of her lesson too. I discussed it with my husband and we both find this behaviour very odd, even though he teaches quite well. I mean its normal to remove shoes, but socks? My daughter is rarely in her bare feet at home, but it doesnt bother her to be at the lessons. Should we ignore it or should we ask the teacher about it, or should we assume more severe things and take action? We are very unsure of what to do, do you have any advice?
Answer: Asking for shoes off is normal; socks a little odd. Why don't you accompany her to a future lesson and wear shoes and socks yourself? If he asks you both to take off your socks, he is probably just quirky. If he just asks your daughter to remove her socks or does not ask either of you to remove socks during that lesson, then I'd find another violin teacher. Something is weird. I'd also see if he goes barefoot too. If he is wearing shoes or socks but your daughter is told not to, that would be a red flag. You can ask your daughter this without attending a lesson.

Answer: I'm a teacher, and I've worked with a wide range of kids -- the good, the bad, and the ugly, as you put it. I strongly believe that rewards actually UNDERMINE the messages we are trying to send our children. Your son already desperately wants to please you and to please his teacher. He loves making you happy and knowing that he's done the right thing. He is probably trying his hardest! If you reward him separately, you shift the focus AWAY from being good and toward the reward. You send the message that the reward is the reason he was good, or that people are good because they want rewards. If being good means that he gets a reward, then being good must not be very much fun for its own sake! Instead, notice his successes, and help him to see himself as a person who chooses to be good. "The teacher says that you did a good job during story time! You must have really listened." "I can see that you tried really hard to be a good friend. You should be proud of yourself." If you want to take him out for a treat once a week, go right ahead! But don't give him the idea that the treat is for being good, or that the reason to be good is the treat. Let being good be its own reward.

Was the behavior of the Principal and Teacher appropriate?

My daughter is 10 years old and last Friday, after school, they yelled at her continously in the hallway until she was crying uncontrollably. The issue was over six assignments that she had told the after school daycare worker shed finished and then hid in her locker. On top of this they gave her three conduct cuts - two for three unfinished assignments and one for lying to the daycare employee. I agree that she was wrong and deserved to take responsibility for those actions, but this was described to me by someone who witnessed part of it as being "too harsh." Furthermore, they did this right in front of the gym where they even managed to shock and scare the other after school daycare kids. My daughter was abused at a very young age (by a daycare employee) - which is what prompts the crying. So, not only was this humiliating, but it just brought about those feelings again. 1) I dont feel yelling a child (especially elementary school age) is ever an appropriate action by a school. 2) I feel that the discussion shouldve taken place in the principals office or the class room where there wouldve been less risk of others overhearing. 3) I wouldve liked to have been informed of the meeting and given the opportunity to be present. In my opinion they didnt solve anything that day. My daughter just tuned them out. If anything, they ended up losing her respect (and ours) that day. I also found out that night, when I read the conduct cuts (in addition to the unfinished homework) that shes failing her time tests for subtraction, multiplication and division, and has no reading points for this nine weeks. The ONLY things Ive been told that she (in early Nov) was doing MUCH better and (2 wks ago) that she needed to work on her multiplication facts. I find it irresponsible on their part not to inform me of this before now. After all, I cant work to correct a problem Im not aware of. Ive always encouraged her teachers to call me when theres a problem - including this one. Supergirl: I like your answer, but unfortunately, we cant afford to homeschool with our work schedules. Youre right about one thing though - she didnt want to go back. Luckily, with this being the week before Christmas break theres not much "schooling" going on and she wants to finish the week out. This has given me time to arrange for her to go to a different school which she will start after the holiday break in January. Thanks for your answer!
Answer: If you know that your daughter's teachers won't - or can't - call you if your daughter is falling behind, then put in place a program where you reach out to them, frequently. For example, right now, set up a meeting with her teacher, to discuss her performance. I understand that you want the teachers to call you, but they don't. That likely won't change, so you need to find other ways to communicate with them. I don't know why they didn't call. Maybe they have 6-7 classes per day of 30 students each, and can't realistically call parents. Maybe they just don't call. Maybe they suck. I don't know. But knowing that they won't, it's to you to take charge. As for the yelling - make an appointment to speak to the teacher and principle. Do not bring your daughter to this meeting. Speak to them in person. Explain the impact their behavior had on your daughter. Explain why you believe that they reacted inappropriately. Be calm. Don't show anger. Not yet. See what they say.

Appropriate behaviour for 2 teachers?

I have two teachers at my school (they are both in their twenties and one teaches english while one teaches maths if that helps at all). But the way they behave around each other isnt very appropriate in my opinion, they make no attempt to hide their dislike for one another. One boy asked the english teacher a question while my maths teachers was there and when the maths teacher tried to answer it the english teacher told her to butt out of her conversation and leave her classroom. On her way out I am pretty sure I heard her call the english teacher a know it all bitch. There have been many similar incidents but the biggest was most recently when they got in a fight and the maths teacher slapped the english teacher across her face. They were yelling and screaming at each other and making no attempt to leave the student filled corridor. I dont think this is good for two teachers at one of the best boys schools in London and I dont know why one or both of them havent been layed off. What are other peoples views on this? FYI its not Friday here! You would have known if you actually read the question. Thankyou to the one good answer that helped, I agree they should be fired but I dont know if other teachers know about this, I am undecided as to whether I should tell my parents or a teacher yet, I think I might go ahead and do it though.
Answer: I agree that this is inappropriate. 1. They're at WORK. 2. Teachers are supposed to set a good example for their students, and being tactless and slapping each other is not the way to do that. They should be fired for their behavior! Do any other staff members know about this? Like someone in charge of their employment?

Any other ideas? 2.Her mom let her date a 16 year old, and since I dont want her to think that I am reversing everything her mom did, I am going along with it even if I dont agree with it. I got home and found them in her bed and immediately set some more rules. Even though she did not seem happy about it, I talked to her about safe sex, STDs and self respect. I told her the next time I find anything like this she may not seem him for two weeks, the next time she is not only grounded from him but may not go out with her cheer squad for another two weeks and the next time she has to break up with him because this is not appropriate behavior for a 14 year old. 3. The other day I found out she had gotten her belly button pierced by a girl on her cheer squad when another mom called me about it. I went to her room and said hey that was Haleys mom can I see your belly button? She got really mad and I said "you made the choice to get your belly button pierced I need to see it and then we need to go to the doctors to get it removed." Once the doctor had removed it I told her that this kind of risky behavior is not okay. We made a deal that if she doesnt do anything else like this for 6 months she can get her ears double pierced. However, if she does I will have to discipline her.
Answer: A therapist is a good choice. I think she would benefit from sessions by herself and some sessions with you. In those sessions together really listen, come to compromises and afterwords make sure you talk about her mother, hug her and tell her you feel pain from losing her too. Make sure the communication lines are open. Make sure you visit her mother regularly and do things in her honor. This is such a tough situation for both of you. Teenagers this age (whether they lose their mother or not) are looking for acceptance and if you show her you are on her side and that you understand things will get better. As for the discipline techniques, I think they are fair. Another thing you can try is letting her choose her consequences. That way if she breaks a rule she will be punishing herself.

Sara has lived in the United States for six months. She seems withdrawn and does not socialize much with other students. She was educated in her home country and, in fact, studied some English as a foreign language in school. Her teachers are pleased with her work, given the limited time she has been in the country. What do you think the relationship is between an appropriate academic program and her behavior?
Answer: Sara's behavior may be a function of the culture from which she comes. If she is middle eastern, for example, she may not be used to an education system which mixes males and females, or one which places equal value on the opinions and abilities of women. If Sara herself seems contented, the fact that she is withdrawn may mean nothing and be simply mean that she needs more time to adjust to a different set of cultural expectations. In that event, there is no reason to worry about her choosing an academic program which eventually will require her to interact more with others. If, on the other hand, her withdrawal appears to be a symptom of unhappiness or other emotional stress, then it wouldn't hurt for her to talk things over with a counselor. Whether her teachers are pleased with her work or not, she should not be trying to deal with an emotional problem compounded by a strange culture and difficult language.

Is this behaviour appropriate of him, or not?

Theres a teacher at my school who teaches in the classroom near to this corridor where me and my group of friends go at lunch times. He is quite young - looks about 25-30. Anyway, me and my friend were laughing about something one break-time, and he came over and pretended he knew what we were laughing about - it was funny at the time, but he started to do other things like smile at me and my friend when we walk past eachother, and when we were doing some work after school, he came over to ask what we were doing and if we needed help - hes not even my teacher? He also came over when we were eating our lunch, and said he was really hungry and my friend offered him a chip, and he said thanks and winked. I just find hes a bit too friendly sometimes - Hes a nice guy, but I just hope hes not a creep. What do you think, as I just wanted some other opinions?
Answer: I agree with the others. This is a person who is unsure of the correct boundaries. You need to set some for him. Back off. Do not engage with him on such a friendly and familiar level. This is the kind of thing that one learns in Teacher training/education. He is either not too smart or there is something else he has in mind. Either way, not a good way to interact. Trust your instincts. You are absolutely CORRECT!

Do you think teachers should keep their promiscuous behavior out of the classroom?

Ive been to two high-schools & at my past high-school, mostly all teachers behaved in an appropriate manner. However, at my current high-school, there are way too many promiscuous teachers & too many inappropriate teachers. One in particular is a fave among the boys in the school. Shes 26 & looks like a 12th grade student. Ill admit shes very pretty, but attractive or not, she needs to keep things in line & not let them get out of hand. Shell flirt w/ students & other faculty members as well as lets students hit on her & ask for her number. She has even given a few male students a ride to somewhere. This woman is single, but has a child & is partially involved w/ her babys father. Another teacher at my school is 30, married, & has a kid. Shell flirt w/ the boys in class & call herself "sexy" & has shown us provocative pics of herself. She even told a cute sophomore that his dad is probably sexy & that he should tell him that she said hey (in a flirty way). Does anybody else think teachers should keep this kind of behavior outside of the classroom/school?
Answer: Hon, if I were you, I'd send an anonymous letter to the school principal. The behavior is inappropriate and the principal is responsible for the actions of the teachers. If he/she doesn't already know about they should. And if nothing changes noticeably within a week or two, send a letter to the PTA and the school district offices. That behavior can lead to situations where there are severe and even dangerous consequences. It is absolutely unacceptable, and certainly inappropriate. And depending on the teacher's actions, could be illegal. Edit: Oh, and the provocative pictures part. That crossed the line, I skimmed over that part and missed it until rereading. Tell your parents, and send those letters detailing everything that's happened. That teacher should be suspended for her actions and an investigation should be mounted into the teachers actions.

Can my sons middle school teachers get reprimanded for going to the bars in the town they teach in?

I sometimes work nights at a bar in the town where I live in, and where my children go to school. Several times I have seen a few of my sons middle school teachers "close down the bar" and get totally "wasted". Is this behavior ok? I know this question might be filled with a few "what ifs", but what if some of the students see these teachers stumble out of the bar obviously drunk, wearing clothing that would not be appropriate at school... (at whatever time, maybe coming home late from a trip, a concert... etc...) I dont want my son to see his teachers in this manner. I know that teachers are real people, but they should be some sort of pillar in the society. I dont think that they should be going to bars in the towns where they work. Who can I write about this? Im dont want my kid or anyone elses kid see their teachers in any other light but professional. They have come in at 8:00, and they go bar hoping from one bar to another. The movie theater is right across the street from most of these bars! Im not saying the kids are seeing them at 2:00 in the morning! They look like a bunch of slobs without class, hanging all over each other....
Answer: I find it very interesting to see how many don't like the idea you work in a bar. I would like to know what kind of bar and a little more info before I jumped to such a conclusion. I know several fine people who work in a "bar" and are great parents and community people. I spent 36 years in public education in the same town I lived. Some of my colleagues have disagreed with me but I feel that teachers, firefighters, cops, etc., should relinquish some of the their so called rights under the circumstances you describe. The manner in which teachers dress, speak, act and conduct themselves is a very important aspect of teaching. Whether you like it or not they are role models and should act a s such. Either go to such establishments in another community or move. I feel very strongly about this role model thing with public employees as well as professional athletes. If the behavior you describe is in fact habitual and not just a one time thing I would speak to a school administrator that you trust and feel has good judgment and let it be handled internally. If they are totally wasted they are in fact breaking the law and god forbid could end up killing someone or themselves.
