why is a Fenced Yard mandatory for dog adoptions?
Okay, I am so frustrated with this whole thing. I not only have a house on a large open piece of land, but I am a Certified Dog Trainer, as well as a Dog Groomer working part time at my areas most reputable Veterinary Clinic...and what I seriously dont understand is why having a "Fenced Yard" is mandatory for dog adoption, when I clearly have the knowledge, and resources to provide a most caring and educated environment. I was denied at a few different rescue agencies because I didnt have a fenced yard. I have a huge open yard thats actually away from any major streets (and even the one I live on now has barely any cars driving by). Its just frustrating and Id like to know how someone with little to no dog experience will automatically have the upper hand just because they have a fenced yard? Wouldnt that "requirement" make people more apt to leave their dog outside and just stay there? I know theres quite a few questions in here, but can someone please explain this to me?
Well, UHave2BeKiddingMe, since youd like to claim my ignorance for dog care, I not only feel insulted, but confused at your statement...dogs do not NEED a fence. Take a dog that has extreme separation anxiety from their owner...the owner lets the dog out, the dog freaks out and digs a hole to get out of the enclosed area. What dogs NEED is a properly trained owner on how to PROPERLY train them to obey the first time they are told, AND care for them. It baffles me that there are owners out there that will let their dogs get matted, let their nails grow so long that they protrude through their paws, and not properly socialize thier dogs so they can develop proper behavior and STILL be able to adopt just because of a damn fence...yet people such as myself that have a professional career with the animals get the short end of the stick. I mean after all, arent shelters supposed to be about finding the best home so the dog doesnt end up there again? OR so that the dog lives a happy life?
Answer: I feel your frustration. I have nearly 15 years experience with my breed. My oldest dog passed last fall at age 14+. I didn't have a fence and he obviously wasn't neglected. All the breed rescues demand a fence and I can't get approved either. My rescue Scottie was from an SPCA and that group was willing to overlook a fence and find a home that understood the breed. I was lucky--she was the best dog and I gave her a wonderful home.
So, we want to give a home to our breed, but get denied. The result is we go to breeders for our dogs. I would love to welcome a new dog or pup to my family. The only logical option is that I'm on a rather lengthy list with a quality breeder. I'll get a dog--sometime. I can wait. But I do feel that I can offer a great home.
And, we were finally able to build a fence this week. It took 12 years to be in a financial place to do this. I will practice agility with my current dog. I can sort of understand the rescue rules, but it is frustrating. Especially when you have a breed that digs. I would not leave a Scottie unattended in a fenced yard. Fence or no fence, I will continue to leash my dog and take her for long walks. We both enjoy it.

Dog adoption!?
I am doing a campaign for my public relations class to increase adoption awareness amoungst college and just graduated age people. I was wondering if anyone could help me out, Ive already emailed some local animal shelters but havent gotten any responses
What are you looking for in a potential dog adopter? Do you only adopt out to people whove had dogs in the past? What if theyve never had a pet before? Do you have reduced fees for older dogs? Do you offer any kind of training and/or after adoption support? If so, do people use it? How do you feel about adopting out to college/just graduated college age students? Do people have to have a house with a fenced in yard or is an apartment fine? Please feel free to throw in any pertinant information about adoptions that I might have not asked about.
Also, do you ever do events, like adoption drives or just general awareness about animals adoption, abuse, etc..., where you bring some of the animals (dogs) to the event with you?
Answer: I dont volunteer with a shelter, but with a rescue group.
What do we look for in a potential dog adopter?
The most important thing we look for is a person who is willing to accept the total responsibility of owning a dog, from the training to the vet bills, to redecorating the house so it is safe for a dog. If there are children, I look at their behavior. Are they little uncontrolled brats or are they respectful and gentle? I look at the home. Is it messy, with stuff just laying everywhere? Is the kitchen cluttered and dirty with all kinds of things out for dogs to get into?
Granted, some of these things can be taught, but there are lots of people out there who are not willing to adjust their lives a little to accomodate a new addition.
We require personal references to ensure sincerity and follow through, and vet references if they have owned a pet before. If their vet tells us that any vaccinations have lapsed, or the dog wasnt put on heartworm prevention, it is definitely a red flag for us.
We dont put alot of emphasis on monetary stability. Yes, it is nice to adopt out to people with money, but they can be just as untrustworthy as anyone else. I look for the person who is going to call us for help if something happens that they cant handle on their own.
We do reduce our fees based on the age of the dog. We also offer reduced fees to senior citizens who want to adopt a companion.
As far as training, most of the dogs we have in foster care are obedience and potty trained already, and the individual foster parent becomes the "go to" person for that dogs adopter.
We have adopted out to condos, apartments, and homes without fenced yards. We are very careful to educate the adopter on escape issues, and sometimes we do decline an adoption if we think the dog will be able to get loose in the home environment.
Since our main purpose is to get the animals stable and secure homes, we do not usually adopt out college students. They are either away at school and the dog ends up in the care of someone else, or if they take the dog with, the dog ends up at risk from the comings and goings of others who may not be as responsible and careful as the owner.
Our group does as many rescue events as we can get into to raise money for high vet bills, and our 501c status and insurance does not allow us to bring the foster dogs into the public. We are allowed to bring our own dogs to show people and do breed education.
I have adopted dogs out to:
An unmarried couple living in a cramped old beat up flat that was completely immaculate inside, even if it was old and beat up.
An unemployed father with four children and a working wife. The kids were wonderful and very well brought up, the house was clean, and the whole family was involved in educating themselves on dog ownership.
I have refused an adoption to:
A single mom with a great home and two teenage girls. The 16 year old was a ditz who didnt want a dog, and her comings and goings would have put the dog at risk.
A young unmarried career woman with a very posh condo, who was so anal about clean that I could tell right away that she would never be able to tolerate a dog. She cringed when my dog (12 pounds) licked her face.
Hope I helped!

What qualifies a pet store as bad?
Do you all think Petsmart is as bad as the rest of them?
I know at my local Petsmart, the only animals they have inside are rodents and birds, and cats up for adoption. On the weekends they host dog adoption drives with the local shelters. So is Petsmart as bad as say, a pet store that sells "cavoodles"?
What are your opinions?
Fusspuff: Why dont you take a chill pill? I wasnt refering to that person, or her dog. I was merely refering to pet stores that sell a ridiculously overpriced mutt and give it some fancy "designer name" to trick uneducated people into buying them. Relax sweetheart, its not that serious.
Ali J: As I put in my above edit, this question was not directed at you, or your "cavoodle". I used that name as an example. There are many others I could have used, such as Goldendoodles, or Yorkie-poos. This was the first one that came to mind. I feel bad for your sick dog, but this has nothing to do with you, get over it. And yes, Petsmart is in the USA.
Answer: Petsmart doesn't sell dogs, so they're okay in my books. Cavoodles on the other hand, I couldn't believe that one. I won't even shop in a pet store that sells dogs.
Hey person below me, relax. I don't think it was a jab at that person asking the question, it was more a jab at stupid, neglectful pet stores that sell a mutt for $1500 and give it a fancy new name to make it sound more appealing, like Cavoodles or Goldendoodle.
For everyone else, I'll tell you why it's always bad to sell puppies in a pet store, no matter how well taken care of they appear to be. They come from puppy mills, and by buying one of these overpriced dogs you are supporting people who don't deserve any money. People who are in it only for the money. A truly responsibly breeder would NEVER ever give or sell their puppies to a pet store. These puppies never come from a good place and are very rarely truly healthy. Accidental litters happen all the time, it's never excusable, but it happens. When it comes to a litter of puppies, mixed or purebred, sitting in a pet store its never an accident, and the puppies are never ever worth what they're being sold for. If they gave them away it wouldn't be worth it.
