Teen volunteering-Children with Autism?
I am a teen in high school in New Jersey. I already volunteer and am looking into the YMCA but cannot find anything about Down syndrome, special needs sports, etc. for volunteering. Then again, I havent looked very hard, so I will have to look into that a bit more.
Anyway, as you can tell by the title I need help finding ways (ANY way) that I can volunteer in any way shape or form with KIDS (and teens, just not adults) that are autistic. I dont think I will be a special needs teacher since I plan on become a surgeon of some kind but I feel that volunteering with special needs kids is something I really want to do very much. Any information you can find will help me. Thank you!

I am going to be a sophomore in high school next year and I really want to go to UC berkeley. More info inside?
My Freshman:
Weighted GPA-4.3
Unweighted-3.74
I did no participate in sports or anything, but I have learned that I really need to and therefore am planning to join an important club (DECA) and play tennis next year. I am volunteering ALOT over the summer in hospitals and some other places.
Am I on the right track? What else do i need to do?
Answer: Keep up your GPA! It's really good so far, so don't let it slide. However, don't be afraid to take challenging classes too, especially those honors/AP classes that give your GPA an extra boost. Study hard for your SATs, because those can really make or break your entrance into UC Berkeley, no matter what extracurriculars or GPA you have. My boyfriend got waitlisted for UC Berkeley this year even though he had a 4.2 weighted, played tennis (varsity) for four years, and participated in the two largest clubs on campus. He got 2050 on his SAT. College is tough to get into these days :P

Economics Final Paper
The PPA is the name of the organization and it is available on the major league days like JV and lacrosse day. The organization sells hot-dogs, pretzels, soft-drinks, coffee, chocolates, etc..., the organization helps raise money to support the community.
I sold pretzels at the shack from 9.00 am – 3.00pm, which is located by the tracks at Mac Arthur High School. And I also did community service at wireless touch Hicksville from 3.30 pm-8.00pm. At Macarthur high school I sold pretzels and helped out to keep the shack clean all the time. At wireless touch I sold cell phones ad accerios like Bluetooth, headpiece, leather case, cleaned the store and activated cell phones, as well as helped the customers with phones and device problems and using cingulars customer service and provide customers with essential and effecting solution to their problems. Wireless touch is the place where people who are not very much involved in the community or is always alone left out, can have means of communication with community people. It was a great experience in shack and at wireless touch helping and serving the community.
The organization is providing great variety of services to the community; it is helping school run programs which are not paid for or by school. This organization helps students reach and achieve goal and makes them a better person the organization also teaches students a sources of way to involve them selfs into community and would stop kids from making wrong desicive things like drugs etcc.., At wireless touch, the place provides with small charity to schools to support their after school activities. Small or big donation helps school run their sports or a club in school.
The organization is very successful in providing its services to the community by serving them with refreshment drinks and snacks and raising the funds for our community; the organization has been in service for the community for a long time and has been providing funds since.
The organization can meet the demand by the community by participating more often like wrestling tournament, basketball tournament, varsity tournament or any other league tournaments and help raise more money to support our after school clubs and sports team. The club can also assists and help to encourage students by participating more in voluntary work and join after school clubs.
My personal opportunity cost is that I learned something new, interacted with the people and was successfully able to finish a job. I joined self confidence and to interact with public socially rather then of any means.
My future opportunity cost would be peace of mind and will be happy to assist people at the games or any other social events where I get interact with public socially. I am not socially involved with the people or community it would be a way where I can get to no more people and achieve and also help achieve the goals and support for the community’s welfare program.
Many factors of production’s resources were used like a shack at the school and labor student’s volturesd their time and efforts to help their community and support their home team. And many resources were used like soft drinks, pretzels coffee, chocolates and etc..,
I think I made little contribution to the economy by literally providing the community and school by time and effort. At first I didn’t want to do it but later on I did and I felt really happy to have supported a program and organization that is helping out my school run its after school programs.
The organization is always willing to accept more volunteers and resources from the community and to support the community. The organization always takes in new ideas to improve it and achieve more success by helping out sports team like wrestling which is not funded by the board of education and help them run the tournaments by providing them with funding needed to successfully operate the season.
Answer: The errors are too numerous to mention. Use a spell check. Fix broken and incomplete sentences. Why does an ellipse follow "etc.?" Is wireless touch the name of a store? (It should be capitalized, if so.) Your "opportunity cost" is something you paid for, not something you gained. They are "accessories", not "accerios." You "joined" self confidence, or did you "gain" self confidence. The club can assist, or can "assists"?
Lots of problems are in this. I assume this is for High School? If so, you need to retake an English class.
The errors were too numerous to deal with in this format.

Answer: You're in good shape, but I suspect you probably already know that. Of course to get into schools that selective, you'll need to make sure and kill on the SAT and/or ACT, but that's also a couple years off. I think something important to not lose sight of, beyond the fact that there are tons of incredibly schools beyond just the two you've mentioned, is that it's important to pursue something you are actually passionate about. Those schools have countless applications from cookie-cutter "good" high school students. Remarkable grades and scores, but nothing to define them as somehow unique. So if computer programming is something you're really into, terrific- use that and write a program that helps improve efficiency at some local non-profit. Or if you are really into medicine/science, great- shadow a doctor for awhile, and try and help out with some research, even its grunt work like washing beakers. Pursue something you love and then do something with it. Colleges eat that up a lot more than just numbers on a page and a laundry list of extracurriculars.
As an idea, to get a feel for what super selective programs looks for, check out the next year's list of Rhodes Scholars (not something for you to worry about for 8 years) and try and find a common thread. You'll see lots of very smart people, but not remarkable because they had great GPA's only. They all DID something. Start a community library in Baghdad, helped develop a cure to some obscure orthotic problem, etc.
Good luck, just don't forget this above all: Have FUN.

Improving resume for law school?
I need to do some volunteer work to imporve my resume. I am planning on applying to law school soon. What would you guys reccomened for me to do in terms of sports teams, work volunteer work etc? Please give specific examples. I will get a job in a law firm soon as a secretary or what have you, and i want more things that would improve my chances.
Answer: A job in a law firm won't help you. Working on an issue campaign (election season is around the corner, after all) would be your best bet. It shows you're passionate about something and want to make a difference.
That said, if you have a whole bunch of volunteer experience in your last year of school and nothing before that, the admissions committee who reviews applications will see right through it.
Your resume and volunteer work will only matter a very small amount to the admissions committee. Your LSAT score, then your GPA are basically all that counts (despite how sad that is).

How tough is it really to be accepted into MIT?
My question is just as the title states, but I would like to know MY chances as well.
I am currently entering my freshmen year in high school. The school I am going to, George Washington High School in WV, isnt very "prestigious" as many high schools but is still "up there."
Through middle school Ive maintained a 4.0 in 6th, 4.1 in 7th, and a 4.3 (the highest we can achieve) in 8th. Through grade school, if it matters, I always had As that were 96% or above on report cards except for one half of a quarter when I fell to a 92% B in science.
I am trying to take the hardest courses we can take offered to us per grade in all subjects. This year I will be in all honors courses and one AP (only one was offered) and at least one year ahead of my grade in both math and science. I am very involved in sports but feel that I need to start some more volunteering work.
I know most colleges focus more on the upperclassmen years, but Ive been told that MIT focuses on all grades. If this is true or not, I do not know. And just a little add in, I am a female and Asian. Ive heard that this may affect their choosing of students as well.
But if I keep this up, would I have a "strong" chance of gaining acceptance into MIT? And also what about my chances in applying to Purdue University, VT, or Carnegie-Mellon, (which I know you need to find a sponsorship for) and maybe even Cal-Tech?
Thank you very much!

what is the best way to get parents to volunteer in minor sports or with events of their childs activities?
Im in very family oriented martial arts club. The rates are the most reasonable of all sports in our community, and the parents are good to offer help initially....But when it comes down to needing help with equipment cleaning, cleaning after tournaments, etc....no one steps up...maybe 1 or two and we have an 80 + club...so we are considering increasing our rates...but really dont want to. I need to get the students and parents to help out more. The whole point is to make it affordable so the whole family can participate and the kids are introduced to a very positive and character building environment. However there is 2 of us running it 3 times a week and we both have careers and families.....the tournaments we hold and other activities take alot out of us preparing then having to clean up and such...
Parents have been asked and before tournaments we do have a volunteer sign up sheet....everyone says yes I will...then dont sign up...and ive had some back out of their sign ups last minute. Everyone has great intentions...
Answer: Ask them too. The parents are paying for participation and coaching in the sport. You may not be able to get them to help you clean the equipment (that's why they pay you), but you can get them to help in tournaments and fund raisers by asking them. You can also ask them to help you put equipment away or take down tables after a tournament etc... Get a volunteer sign up sheet and ask everyone to sign up for helping on at least one thing spread the tasks out (so that different people are doing things on different dates etc..) Then remind them nicely the day or week before and Thank them afterwards. In General people like to help but people also like to be recognized when they do and a heartfelt Thank you usually does it.

Answer: This needs some work:
I feel I am a motivated, patient and a reliable being. Doing so in a team environment makes me want to achieve and progress my abilities in many ways possible. I am a very punctual person and my time management skills are excellent. Although I am not as experienced as many other people in work I am prepared to learn and willing to undertake any role given to me.
Don't say you "feel' you are something - just say you 'are' it. Otherwise it sounds like you might not really be. I mean I feel ugly all the time, but my bf says I'm not. Also - a reliable being is silly. Just say reliable. 'doing so in a team' doesn't make sense, really. Say 'participating in a team helps me maximize these skills'.
I mean - get someone to re-write that first paragraph before you send it off because people just wont read any further.
The rest seems good - you have lots of impressive experience. It is just not really written properly. I can't fix it on yahoo answers - get someone you know to help you.
Good luck - I don't want to sound harsh, the experience is good, it is just the way it is written is not really the type of writing that looks good on a CV.

I really NEED to get involved in more extracurriculars this year (i am sophomore) because I didnt do any extracurriculars frosh year. The problem is none of my friends are in clubs, sports, or volunteer. I have asked them, but they say no. I have no friends in the clubs, sports, volunteering and I am really shy so I dont make new friends easily. I know I need to get involved in activities so it will look good on my college application, but I dont know what to do because none of my friends are in extracurriculars and I dont make friends easily..
Answer: What you really seem to be asking is "how can I make this EASY to do" but as you've said, making friends is difficult for you. It's the hard things in life that are often most rewarding and that you learn and grow from.
Remember too, that the days where what you do is determined by what your friends are doing is quickly coming to a close... you're a sophomore!
Look for activities you know you'll enjoy doing,,, the people to do them with will naturally appear. There's nothing worse that doing something boring , regardless of who you do it with, especially when they change activities to be with someone else!
Be true to yourself and TRUE friends will follow.
So really, you only need to decide - Are you going to join some activities or not? You say you need to.
You don't determine your life path as an adult by following your "friends". Will they choose a name for your first born? pick who you will marry? determine your career path? decide what things give your life meaning and worth?
I know it can be tough but you'll feel such PRIDE if you can find the strength to figure out WHO YOU ARE and take the steps to carve your own path.
YOU CAN DO IT! have a little faith in yourself. You're UNIQUE (just like everyone else!)
Good luck

Is It Hard To Get Into A&M (Texas)????From California??
So.......I live in CA.
And I want to do petroleum engineering.
There are close to NONE PET schools in CA, the only being Stanford..I cant hope to go there haha.
But, I am worried about A&M too.
I have a GPA of 3.29 in Sophomore year and a GPA of 4.2 in Junior year with AP physics (4 on test), APUS( 5 on the test), AP ENGLISH (3 on the test), and AP COMPUTER SCIENCE (4 ON THE TEST). Yeah, I screwed up Sophomore year a lot. And I just listed the AP tests if that helps at all, and I know it doesnt help that much.
But bottom line is, my GPA will suck if I average it out.
I have done an internship at Intel and have more volunteer work than needed though???
Do extracurriculars count a lot in Texas????Football????? Cause I have not played any school sports, just leagues, which dont count sadly.......
And I will take the SAT in one month, and then 2 more times after that.
Do I have any chance? And will it be hard for me?
Answer: Wow. You are very well rounded. I am also a current A&M student. I am pretty sure you will get in. Like previously stated. You will bring diversity being from out of state. Your AP score are very good! And yes, they do look at those. And with your internship and volunteer work... wow. It really does show you are dedicted to your education. What any college is looking for is "how is this person going to give back to our campus? How will she reflect upon us?" Don't worry terribly about your GPA. They like well rounded students, as is seems you are, and will factor your gpa into that. I really hope you get in. Aggieland is the best place on earth!!
And as far as difficulty?? I don't know cuz i'm not you. But your main thing will prolly be time management. There are a lot of distractions out there no matter what college you go to. And its easy to sit at home and say "no i wont do that. I'll study." And its another thing to have temptation shining in your face. I'm talking about wasting time.
But good luck to ya friend! A&M is something that can only be experienced :)

How do college resumes work? (read inside for more details)?
I want to Volunteer at many different places such as my local red cross or hospital.
I also want to do a lot of extra-curricular activities such as sports and instrument playing/concerts, or signing up for my arts theaters plays and such.
I heard that these were the kind of things colleges like, so how exactly to I let them know that I did all this stuff in my resume.
Also, what more do you need other than good grades for a college like princeton to give you a scholarship? I mean, anyone and everyone can make good grades...there has to be something more.
Thanx, your answer would mean a lot!!
Answer: College applications do not ask for resumes. On your college applications, there will be a section in which you identify and describe your volunteer or community service activities. There will be another section in which you identify and describe your extra-curricular participation and leadership.
One note of caution: Colleges generally prefer to see evidence of long-term, sustained participation in ONE volunteer activity rather than short-term participation in many different activities. What they are looking for is evidence of interest, tenacity, and commitment. So choose one area in which to volunteer, and spend your time there.
As to your scholarship question, schools do indeed look for more than just good grades. They look at class ranking, SAT or ACT scores, the difficulty of the courses you've taken, and involvement in extra-curricular AND community activities. Schools are seeking to admit well-rounded candidates, who have the ability to bring something special to the incoming class as a whole. (That "something special" can be anything! An unusual interest or skill or expertise, a talent or gift, a particular cultural or ethnic background, or an admirable character trait like tenacity, or altruism.) So think about what's special about you, work in areas that allow you to cultivate that "special thing," and highlight that in your college applications.
Best wishes to you!

How Can I specialize in Sports or Orthopedic Physical Therapy?
I am currently an undergraduate student in a Pre-Physical therapy program. I am doing some volunteer work in Physical Therapy, and discovering I definitely would like to go into sports and/or orthopedic physical therapy. Do I just proceed to physical therapy school as normal, or can I enter a specialized program for sports and orthopedic rehabilitation? My advisors told me I need more experience before I decide, and refused to give me answers. I would just like to have information for the future- thank you!
Answer: In PT school, you learn all of the specialities. You specialize after you graduate. You will have to do clinicals in a hospital nursing homes and pediatrics.

Extracurricular activities besides sports and clubs?
Im going into my junior year in high school. I need more extracurriculars for college. I hate sports (I do horseback ride but thats not a school sport). The problem is that at my school you can only have one club per semester. I was in 2 clubs last year, one the first semester and one the second, but this year I was only in one club because I loved it (I stayed in 1st and 2nd semester), and I want to stay in it next year and probably senior year too. Im planning on volunteering at a few places this year, but Im not sure if that would count because theyre not school related. So what can I use besides clubs and sports?
Answer: When colleges say they want you to participate in extracurricular activities, they mean anything that does not involve your classes.
That includes horseback riding and volunteering.
That also includes church, social, and community groups.
