ESSAY; What ‘Leaving the Atocha Station’ Says About America
When an adviser to President Obama was quoted in The New Yorker as saying that the administration’s policy in Libya was “leading from behind,” he initiated a season of hand-wringing about American decline, as if he had announced that the president was implementing a secret plan to make a second-rate country even worse. What are some clever ways to ask the cute guy from the bookstore out?
Theres a guy that works at a local, independently owned secondhand bookstore. Hes a spoken word poet, and a published writer. I feel like I should come up with a clever way to ask him out. Any suggestions?
Answer: No clever one-liners.
Be honest. For example, "Would you like to go to Starbuck's with me?" Or whatever.
Something light-weight and easy.
Just relax and casually ask him for something like that. If he say's he can't for some reason, don't get upset or insecure. He could actually be busy or unavailable, etc. If he just won't do it, move on!
Relax and have fun! He'll be flattered that you asked if nothing else.
Do it!
Just do not try to be funny or clever. It'll be obvious and a turn-on.

Huge Dilemma; Please Help!?
Some people say that, in order to find your passion in life, just think about something that you can do naturally; something thats easy for you to do and that will reveal what youre passionate about, and thats what you should follow. But what if something youre really good at doing, doesnt necessarily match what youre passionate about? For example, I love music with a passion! I always have, I always will. Listening to it is my absolute favorite pasttime. My whole life, its been my dream to be an entertainer. I am at my most happiest, when Im listening to music. I can listen to music for hours and have a great time doing so because I can envision myself performing to the songs. But just a little over a year ago, I discovered that I have a talent for writing spoken word poetry. Which really threw me because, I never aspired to be a poet. Its never been anything that I dreamed of doing. But literally out of nowhere one day, I start writing these poems and every time I share them with people, I get rave reviews. Friends tell me I should publish a book and all kinds of things. But how does being a spoken word poet have anything to do with my love of music and my desire to wanna be an entertainer/recording artist? I have mad love for both, but Im confused. Which one should I focus on pursuing? I know God has reason behind every gift that he gives and everything that he does and I absolutely love that I can write poetry but Im confused as to why he gave me this particular gift. Which one should I put all my energy towards in terms of pursuing it? Can someone please give me some insight; Id really appreciate it.
Answer: Get an acoustic guitar....doesn't have to be the best but playable...learn your chords...learn how they connect to each other...put your chords to your poems and go from there..

Words from a poets heart: Thoughts on this poem I wrote?
[Title] Words From A Poets Heart
A twirl of hair drapes across her tender face
The gentle winds are whispering
A swirl of clouds linger like her silky lace
My eyes are hardly stirring
A thought is still in the shadows of my room
The dream has not been too right
I read the letters in the yellow light of noon
And at the stroke of midnight
Do I appear to speak in poems while always manifesting
Have I been clear in every word Ive ever said
Or has the fog been growing
Do I remember or forget the songs she sang with love
I only stare into the ground and up above
Where stars like eyes are twinkling
A spark of fire seems to light the road of pain
Leaps with no cry or warning
A park, where green grass is growing just the same
Is where I find the morning
Her soul is waiting in the silence of the rain
Yet thunder roars in anger
I scream in fear for every hope without a name
Becomes the rising danger
Do I reflect a radiant light or am I coloured black
I only know the crimson color of her eyes
And violet dresses, full back
Do I regret or feel no shame in what Ive always known
I let my face drop to the ground while all alone
I weep against the coat rack
A voice confuses me within the dreary night
It says that I am humble
But no one could love a man who begs his right
To live in worlds that crumble
She looks into the face of something that I am
And wonders if she knows me
I see that twirl of hair between her folded hands
She prays on bended knee
Could I know deep within my heart that she has seen the truth
I think I know from swirling like the violet clouds
Im simple and uncouth
Do I move on or do I stay in garden walls around me
Her song continues to be played so silently
Im back in days of youth
Will I be stillened by her mellow song again
Or was last night the end
Answer: oh my goodness. adam i love this poem and its totally going on my myspace. i feel like this is your best on yet i really like it hunn.. you are a wonderful poet and you really do use your gift from god.

Taking the words from a poet, Remix. C/C?
I already posted this once but after reading the helpful answers of several people I have almost entirely redone it. Please tell me what you think?
Taking the Words From A Poet
Taking the words from a poet
Is like taking a bee from its hive,
Or taking a fish away from the sea
Youre taking their very life.
Taking the words from a poet,
Is like taking his very breath.
Youre putting his head on a chopping block,
Youre bringing about his death.
When a poet no longer has words
Things can turn quite absurd,
Like putting a fish into a beehive
This can change your entire life.
Hitting your head with a hammer
Might cause something to happen,
I could write a poem about it
But I wouldnt know where to begin.
Taking the words from a poet
Is a terrible thing you see,
It was the one thing I had going
Now what can I possibly be?
Taking the words from a poet
Means I have writers block,
It means I cant think of anything
My thoughts are sealed in with a lock.
If you find the key to my head
Wont you please ship it to me?
I need to get these words out
Before Im completely crazy!
Any advice or comments is welcome (please dont be rude).
Also Do you ever feel this way when you cant write, Kinda like someone must have stolen all your words cause they sure aint there anymore.
Blue Child: Youre right that the mood goes between funny and serious. My goal was to write a poem that points out something serious in a funny manner. Making you laugh, but also understand the point of the poem, which is that a poet without words is just lost. I also thought the sort of mixed up analogys and rhyme scheme might add to the picture of how lost the poet is when they cant write.
Answer: Because you asked so kindly :)
Ok, here is what I see in this...
I can not tell if this poem is serious or smart alic..or just funny.
Let me tell you why...
Because lines such as this
"Taking the words from a poet,
is like taking a bee from my hive"
Those lines make me wanna nod my head, and agree with you...in a serious matter
Lines like
"HItting you head with a hammer" And " You're putting his head on a chopping block"
Make me wanna laugh.. (Or maybe that's just me)
It's just funny how you change the mood so suddenly..which makes me wanna laugh at something you may think is serious.
On the other note,
I like this poem because you ARE right..and I agree with this poem
and If someone took the words from me (though I am no poet)
I would indeed, go insane.

A church where the dead gets risen and the lame can walk.?
I am an heavy weight amateur boxer. I have been boxing for 6 months now. My trainer is a very aggressive guy who really challenges us. 3 week ago, my trainer added me on Facebook and when he added me I guess he saw all of my statuses. My statuses consist of nothing but famous quotes that I made up. And my notes consist of my poetry (Im also a spoken words poet). He really liked my quotes. After the next training session, my trainer told me that I have a great gift and that there is a calling on my life. He then invited me to his church and he begin to tell me that the dead gets raised at his church, peoples sight comes back, and that the lame begin to walk. I honestly dont believe him simply because though I am an atheist, I dont think someone would come back to life just to die again. Relating to the bible, I feel as though Jesus had a purpose for raising Lazarus(sp). I see the"holy pastors with the power to do magic" all of the time on TV. I do want to visit his church out of respect for my trainer but Im unsure how hell feel if I decide not to return. What do you think?
Answer: Your trainer is deluded and dishonest.
If dead people could really be brought back to life, it would be worldwide news. However, like all such miraculous claims, they fall apart under scrutiny, and turn out to be completely false.
Peace.

The apparition of a salsa band
gleaming in the Liberty Loan
pawnshop window:
Golden trumpet,
silver trombone,
congas, maracas, tambourine,
all with price tags dangling
like the city morgue ticket
on a dead mans toe.
Answer: It is a humorous poem that immediately recalls the William Carlos Williams poem, "the red wheel barrel"
"So much depends on a red wheel barrel
glazed with rain
beside the white chickens."
Ultimately, the tone turns sardonic as the comparison of prices to toe tags complains that commerce kills art.
You can also contrast the rural setting of WIllaims with the urban setting of Espada.

What do you think of this poem? ?
I am an aspiring spoken word poet, and here is a piece I wrote specifically for it. Let me know what you think. A biographical poem of Sylvia Plath.
Your life was a story
Part of me wants to live in.
I want to climb into the past
And just float there a while.
I would grasp your words
And then swallow them like
Vitamins- no, like sleeping pills.
Yeah, sleeping pills, just like you had done.
I would follow you like a ghost or a shadow.
I would watch contemplate suicide.
I would follow you into
Your cellar, and I would count
With you, how many sleeping pills,
You swallow.
More than fifty…
More than fifty and it still
Wasn’t enough.
Enough.
You were tortured, you were sick.
You wanted to die.
I can’t deny you that.
I would follow you then
To the hospital.
And I would stay there
With you.
You were so scared.
And I want to hold your hand
And tell you.
We all get scared, honey.
But I was too late.
I will always be
Too late.
Because they still led you down a hall
To get your brain messed with.
Electroshock therapy.
Therapy, that’s what they called it.
As if scaring you enough to
Turn sane again
Was therapy.
And then, I would follow you
Out of these hospitals into
Rejection.
Because publisher after publisher
Couldn’t see your worth.
You couldn’t see your worth.
And I would hold your hand.
Finally, you publish Colossus,
A book of poetry.
Beautiful poetry that was so
Fluid,
You could have bathed in it.
I bathe in it now.
And I would follow you still,
From Boston to England.
I would be there, just over your shoulder,
For your marriage.
For the birth of your daughter,
And even the still birth of your
Second child.
And I would hold your hand,
Through the birth of your son.
Then you published the Bell Jar,
A novel, that when I had read it,
I was afraid.
I was afraid because you had wrote
My soul.
Please, hold my hand.
And then you started work on Ariel,
More stunning poetry, more bath water.
I would follow you,
Until you separated
From your husband.
Because love is rough,
And life is rougher,
Somehow, you knew that.
You’ve always known that.
And I was there,
When you were cold,
With two children,
During the coldest winter in England,
In one hundred years.
You woke up at four am,
Before the children did,
Just to write.
To write.
You were finishing a poem
A day.
Because it was all
That you could do,
To keep sane.
Until poetry was not enough.
Enough.
And then you slipped away
From us.
And I would no longer
Be able to hold your hand.
Your hand
Allowed your death.
Cooking gas poisoned your lungs.
You wanted to die.
I wish someone had
Denied you that.
Your life was a story.
And we all live by your
Words.
Oh Sylvia, all I want to do
Is hold your hand,
Because I am so scared.
You can’t deny me that.
Answer: wow. Its stunningly beautiful. Its moving, and it makes me want to cry that sylvia had to go through with all that.
lol,im speechless, really. I love how its a poem but it also teaches you about this most passionate poet who lead a hard life and fought her way through the bitter end. Its pretty inspiring.=] Thanks 4 sharing your awesome poem!

ON POETRY; Tomas Transtromer’s Poems and the Art of Translation
If you’re a poet outside the Anglophone world, and you manage to win the Nobel Prize, two things are likely to happen. First, your ascendancy will be questioned by fiction critics in a major English-language news publication. Second, there will be a fair amount of pushing and shoving among your translators (if you have any), as - By DAVID ORR
Active, meaningful verbs. Help!?
Directions: Rewrite each sentence, replacing the underlined portion with more active, meaningful verbs
Example. Poets "are careful to budget" their words.
Poets budget their words carefully.
1. The precide verb "isnt" always "available" when you need it.
2. As a writer, you must "be aware of" your own inappropriate words.
3. In fact, "we are not surprised to see" that nonpersonal voice in certain kinds of documents.
4. Further, in writing "there are" certain modifiers, such as nonrestrictive clauses and phrases... that we rarely use in speaking.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. The example was helpful. But I need another example to know if Im on the wrong track. Thanks a lot!
