My child wont nap?
My son is almost 6 months old. He has been a great napper and now all of a sudden he wont nap during the day. It is such a project to get him to sleep. It sometimes takes hours...Why is this happening?? He did have an ear infection but we went friday for a check up. They told me the infection was gone but he still had fluid in his ears. Could this be doing it? He is acting fine other then no napping..HELP!!!
Answer: There are natural sleep windows throughout the day were it would be easier for your little one to fall asleep and stay asleep. Try and get him up around 7am. First nap should be around 9am. Second nap should be three hours after he wakes up from his first nap. His first nap should last an hour or so but no longer than 1hr 1/2 if you would like hime to have a great sleep in the afternoon. Optimal sleep times during the day are between 8am and 10 am and between 12pm and 3pm. Bed time for your little guy should be between 7 and 8pm. Keeping your little one up later will not make him sleep in longer in the morning.
Is your little one getting more mobile? Certain mildstones affect their sleep habits too!
I wish you luck. I know what you are going through I have a 9month old that has just figured out she can stand up in her crib! Not easy putting her down for her naps either!

My child wont visit grandparents home -- house too old...?
My hometown is in another state, and my elderly parents still live in the home I grew up in, an older and modest townhouse in an urban area, as compared to the residence we have in a suburban area.
One child is visibly upset about visiting the gparents home for two weeks. Said he wasnt comfortable staying there. My parents home has older plumbing, and on our last visit this child would not use the bathtub during the one week visit.
Now my child has told me the only way he would go back to visit is if we stayed in a hotel!!! For me to get a hotel room for two weeks would add expense to a tight budget. I try to schedule low-cost activities in the town as entertainment when we visit, and we help out my parents while we visit.
The child is less than 12 YO, I cannot hire a babysitter to stay with this child while I travel and I am growing thin of fighting on scheduling this trip. As parent, how do I make this trip work and the child enjoys it?
Follow up on questions --
he doesnt like the house...water, plumbing, no Mickey Ds nearby, (and I tried to tell this kid when I was a child, Mickey Ds was an annual treat, not a frequent event) and guess what-- gpa and the other relatives doesnt have a bunch of TVs, video games or cable!! (*and we do bring his electronic amusement" with us - and we mail ahead of time books and activities)
I cant leave him with friends or relatives here, there arent any nearby. So the travel is no other choice.
I tried to tell him I didnt always like visiting my gparents but I found people nearby who loved to play with me....and it was fun.

Answer: Well, sometimes kids have to learn that they have to do things they don't want to. Say that the visit will happen but talk to your child about how to deal with each issue - i.e. have a plan. Talk to your child about why else they may not want to visit (may have nothing much to do with the house, who knows?) That is going to be part of your child's life as an adult presumably, i.e. visiting and staying places that are different than home. It's good experience I think.

Help! Child wont go to sleep alone (details in ques.)?
Hi there, I need some help here with a sibling of mine who has been giving my parents and me some trouble for the past month and a bit.
She is 8 yrs old, and has had no trouble sleeping in the past by herself, even when nobody else is upstairs. A bout a month or so ago, she started having problems going to bed. She would start to cry, call for my mom and dad, and say that she didnt want to be upstairs by herself.
It has kept continuing, and she will not go to sleep by herself (says she has a stomache, starts to cry really loud) until someone is upstairs.
In the past week or so it has progressed and now she wont go to bed without my parents, and has been going to bed with one of them now.
She says this all started when a girl at her school told her a scary story. And now whenever she goes to bed she thinks about the bad stuff, and gets scared. Just recently my mom made her write down what she felt (to somehow make her feel better) and she said that becaues of the stories, she now thinks someone is going to kill her whenever she goes to bed.
There doesnt seem to be an end to this, and although I hope its just a phase- its getting tiring for my parents because the hours leading up until bedtime my sister starts crying until my parents say shes going to sleep with them.
Does anyone have any help or suggestions as to how we can get this to stop? Ive talked to her, my mom has, and even when my parents get stern with her to go to bed, she wont listen.
If anyone has any ideas, it would gladly be appreciated - hopefully this will end soon! Kids and their scary stores!
Thank you guys for all your answers! They were all much appreciated, so Ill have the Answers community choose the best one! :)
Answer: Here's how I stopped my fear : Leave the TV ON! Until they're asleep turn it off. Or you can just sleep with her until she falls asleep and then leave.

the mother of my child wont let me see my son?
Im 17 and i have an almost 2 month old son Joesph. He was conceived during a one night stand with a girl i met at a party. I cheated on my girlfriend Brooke who was in jail serving a one year sentence for drug possession charges. She got out and freaked out when i told her about Joesph and began using again breaking her promise to me to stay clean. She said she went back to drugs because i cheated. She called Joesph a bastard child and a worthless piece of shit. We broke up after she forced me to choose between her or Joesph i chose my son. Joesphs mom and i began dating she is in love with me and was excited to start a family. We dated for 2 months but i dont feel love for her and i felt stuck in a relationship i didnt wanna be in. This all changed when Brooke told me she was pregnant. She is in rehab and trying so hard to get and stay clean it makes me proud. I am sure the child is mine because she swore she never would cheat on me. I broke up with Joesphs mom and am back together with Brooke i love her and she loves me. Joesphs mom was pissed about me breaking up with her for Brooke she hates Brooke. She told me i will never see Joesph again. This has hurt me so much i love him he means everything to me. She lives in a different city so it is quite easy for her to do this is. It is killing me not be able to see him what should i do so i can see my son?

My adult children wont put their 2 1/2 year old down for a nap and we suffer for it.!!!!!!?
We see my 2 1/2 year old grandson 2-3 times per week and every time we do our family has to endure crying, tantrums, fussing, you name it which goes on and on. I have told my kids that they need to put their child down for a nap each day. They hear me but dont say anything back. I have tried to reason with them about the fact that a nap for my grandson is healthy for him. That he needs a structured time to rest his brain. Lately they are telling me when I mention a nap that my grandson is sick is why he is fussy. I know better. It is getting to the point that I dont even want to be around him. Anyone with any advice? By the way, I kept him today and guess what he got? Thats right, a nap and he was happy the remainder of the day.
Answer: That ain't a nap problem, that's a discipline problem.

How to let babysitter know my child wont be coming back?
My child has been going to this babysitter since she was 6 weeks old and she is now 2 years old. Everything has been good up until recently. I have been receiving complaints from other parents who children go there. I have been more observant lately and there have been several things that have made me a upset. My child is old enough to start potty training, but every time I mention it. The sitter says well I asked her if she had to go and she said no. The child is 2, you have to take the child to the restroom and so on. In the past my hubby has gone to pick her up and she was out on the porch playing unsupervised with other children. Also there is no interaction between the sitter and child as far as reading, playing or preparing her for colors or letters. I pay the sitter weekly. Should I expect less? No this is my child and she is at a delicate age and should be interacted with. She is behind in talking and she was 20 months before she walked. I work 8 hours a day and it is hard to do alot after work with a six year old with homework, cook, bath and etc. My hubby and I are just not satisfied any more. We already have a babysitter lined up at the first of the year, but how do I go about telling the sitter the child wont be back. Please give me your suggestions?
As I have reviewed some of your suggestions. I have failed to mention that we have been working with my child at home with the potty training, but when asked to follow up at the sitter is when she said I asked her, but she said no. She still needs to be taken and sat on potty to try. And we do work with her at home with talking, etc. just there is no follow up or further interaction at the sitter. Thanks again for all of the responses.
Answer: Just tell her. Say, thank you very much for all your hard work but we've decided to send our child somewhere else. If she pushes for reasons then explain. You're an adult. So is she. Just do it.

The father of my child wont grow up!?
My daughter is 4 months old. A month before she was born I choose not to let the father in her life, but he begged me & promised he would change & be there for both of us. We started dating then moved in together. Weve lived there for 2 months & I have had to ASK him to buy diapers & wipes & baby food. He gives me a limit that I can spend & gets mad if I spend any more. He gets paid over $400 a week so why would he get mad? He gets mad cause he gives me his last $20 or $25 to buy what she needs 2 days after he gets paid. He spends on him first, buying video games that cost $50 each & A POUND OF WEED! I just found out about the weed & when I did that was the last straw. Also the day after he got paid he didnt even come home for 25 hours & got mad cause his mom, his sister, his cousin, his aunt & me were looking for him. When I asked him where he had been he said "wherever the hell he wants to be". I give up on him, I have given him a chance to be in her life & he wants to act like she doesnt matter so I moved all my things back to my moms. Our apartment was FULL, he has 2 TVs, his Xbox & games and his clothes. I brought everything. I know he will beg me not to leave saying that he loves me & he will change but Im not going back. Im even going back to my first choice about not even letting him in her life cause she doesnt need a dad who is going to take care of his wants before her needs. True we are young, Im 21 & he is 20 but its time to grow up when your old enough to have a kid. I do love him & always will, but enough is enough. Why wont guys grow up?
I didnt say it was good weed.
Answer: Dear Korysman,
You were wise to move everything to your mother's (be sure to take the TVs, too, if you paid for them). that was the first step. Next step? Starting TODAY--RIGHT NOW--begin the legal process of getting child support. Fill out and submit the forms TODAY. If you need a lawyer, call your county's Lawyer Referral Service--they will refer you to the right kind of lawyer, and it only costs about $50 for 1/2 hour of consultation. My family has used this service 4x in 3 different states, always with good results.
Don't let him be a deadbeat Dad and get away with it. For your child's sake as well as yours, hold him accountable for his share of the costs of raising your child. That way maybe you could set aside some money to help your child pay for college. If he doesn't pay, the courts can put a lien against his wages.
BTW, it doesn't matter if you're married or not--if necessary, they can do DNA testing to prove that he's the father (I know this because a lawyer friend of mine had a client who had to undergo a DNA test for paternity and it proved that his client was the child's father).
Hold him legally accountable. You owe it to your child.

How do we get our son (18 months) to sleep through the nite?
We are nearly ready to just give up and put up with him waking twice a nite.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Im a stay at home dad and have been since my son was 3 months old, I know the ups and downs of being a stay at home parent and my heart goes out to all those other parents whose child wont sleep through the nite.
Answer: Let your son cry it out. I know it may seem unkind, but it isn't. We did this with my daughter, who is 20 months, and she is happy, active, a good eater, cuddly, talking, running etc. Your child needs a good night sleep to grow and function in the world. And so do you. By this age, kids are manipulative. My friend's son is 19 months and still wakes up a lot yelling "wet wet" and "poop poop." Well, she goes to check on him and he is never wet and hasn't pooped. He just knows how to get his parents to come running. You son is more than old enough to sleep at night, so don't give him a reason to get up, like getting to play, cuddle, have a snack etc. And don't do what the other answerer said and deny him a nap. Kids this age need to refresh during the day, and so do stay at home parents!! Hang in there, and good luck.

child wont stop screaming uncontrollably.. could he have a serious problem?
my friends 6 year old son keeps having crying/screaming fits that last up to 2hours! When hes at school it happens out the blue, hell be fine one minute and in a state the next. When asked whats wrong he just replies with things like i dont want to get in trouble or dont tell my mum
It happens occasionally at home too and he will then say the same to his mum.. i dont want to get in trouble dont tell dad etc.
Ive been good friends with the family for years and i know there is no abuse or strict rules..etc.
The teachers say he is perfectly well behaved and has friends at school and cant see any reason why he starts screaming.
He may be insecure as he is always asking questions like where are you going, how long for, when will you be back, what are you doing etc.
Is this normal? Has anyone else had the same problem with a child?
We have taken him to the doctor and has been referred to a psychiatrist but we have to wait a month.
So would really appreciate if anyone has a clue what could be wrong with him? We are very worried.
He gets extremely worked up & hysterical for no apparent reason?!...
Answer: This may be just temper, however I would get him checked out, as not to be scary it sounds like the traits of a child with aspergers, howvever I wouldn't like to label anything. How is this negative behaviour managed is another biggie. He sounds like he is very fustrated, Get your friend to get this checked out, even for piece of mind if nothing else.

My husband and I have decided to try for another child, I was and still am so excited but just recently have?
started to have doubts/fears. We have 2 children already aged 4 and 7, and my fears are to do with money. I know we struggled bringing up our other 2 and have just recently got back on our feet. i am also worried about the sleepless nights and how this will affect my other kids. But I know that my longing for another child wont go away and that the sleepless nights dont last forever. Are we being selfish by having another 1 or are these feelings/concerns normal?? Im going round in circles in my head!! Am due to have my coil removed on Wed.
Answer: Nothing is ever sure in this life. Sounds like your husband is willing to go for it. Your family and you will probably be fine, don't worry yourself silly. All of mine and my wife's kids are out of the house now and we have not always had enough of everything, but we made it. Now we are waiting on grand kids so we can spoil them and send them home. What do you do when your smart child wont put forth the effort to get good grades?
My 8th grade daughter is capable of being on the honor roll. She has recieved interim report grades as low as D- in more than just one class! This is mostly due to not turning in work. We have struggled with her since 3rd grade in this area. She usually scrapes herself together by report card to actually be on the honor roll. I am concerned that when she starts high school next year and does not have us constantly checking on her progress that her grades will suffer tremendously. We have tried EVERYTHING from grounding, to talking with teachers, to setting up forced study time, to trusting her to do it on her own- nothing changes. What are some things you do to show your kids that school is important, and that grades count? What kind of rewards or punishments do you hand out? New ideas needed geared toward high school age kids!
Right now she has the incentive of going to a summer camp that she really wants to attend if she makes it on honor roll. She has brought all her grades up except math. Her math teacher said she has turned in half the assignments. I always ask detailed questions about what she is learning. I ask if she needs help with anything. She always says there is nothing she doesnt understand. When I first found out this year that she doesnt turn in work, I thought I would solve this by setting the timer for 30 min a day for her to do homework. She will literally stare at OLD school papers, & still the printouts come back with assignments not done! She is way to old for me to know each assignment, and make sure it is completed. She has toured colleges, She has talked with exchange students about school and careers (my mom lives right by a college campus). She loves to read, & so I have used prizes, money rewards. I have gotten books at the library on preteens, careers, school for her to read.
Answer: I think some sort of bribing might work. I know when I was in high school, because I always had good grades, my mom would let me stay home from school sometimes on days I wanted to go or do something, or just stay home and sleep and vedge. Just find out what does motivate her. Is it money, manicures, starbucks??
I was just thinking... if this has been an issue for so many years and the fact that she's completely capable of good grades may indicate she's bored out of her mind. It's easier to notice in younger children since the influence of other teens doesn't overrule good judgement. You may want to see what kind of placement tests her high school offers to make sure she's put in a class her pace.

THE new kid is a bit of an oddball. He struggles to be heard and then to find his footing. He is jostled from every side, knocked off balance. He doesn’t give in. Why wont child protective services get involved?
My neighbor and his wife have three triplets around 4 years old. On a daily basis we can hear both of these grown adults swearing at their kids. I mean words like M-Fr and phrases like "I hate you" and worse. I called Ohio Child Protective Services in Lucas County and they say there is nothing they can do unless the kids get hit. I called the local police and they tell me the same thing. Its unimaginable to think that parents speak to their toddlers this way. Who can I call? Who will listen or step in and help these kids?
Answer: Unfortunately, what the person said before me was correct. Although it might be wrong that people talk to their kids in that way, if they aren't abusing their child physically there is nothing the authorities can do and it's not your business to say how they talk to their kids. Maybe see if you can help them out any way you can by babysitting them, sending over books and movies etc to keep them occupied. It might help them later on to know that they have someone right next door (or across the road) that they can trust in their life.

We want grandchildren but my only child wont reproduce!?
I have a daughter who 26 and has not yet had a child. She is our only child which means she must have kids to keep the family line. We are a proud family with a long history and it distresses me to think that my daughter would waste time before continuing the line...
She tells my wife and I that she just hasnt found the one yet, but the way she acts makes me think that she is just trying to push men away, she comes on way too strong when she meets a new man and I worry that this might be sabotage and that she doesnt really want children at all!
Its very frustrating, and were worried shell be past her peak in a few years time. Weve considered everything (even trying to artificially inseminate her!) in our desperation, but it would be ideal just to get her to change her mind and have children naturally. How can we get her to finally settle down?
now THATS the kind of innovative thinking i was hoping to find. Ant G I wish i could choose you as best answer but Im only level 1. Thank you for your understanding
Answer: Well if your daughter continues to be disrespectful to you, maybe she doesn't deserve to be a part of the family line...
Honestly, if she actually cared about your name, she would have AT LEAST tried to have children.
My suggestion... find a male in your family and take their sperm, find a nice sensible (attractive since they'll share the genes) young girl who wants to share the warmth of a real family...

My child wont talk, whats wrong?
My daughter is 17 mths. She had adenoids taken out and tubes out in 2wks before her 1st bday. She could say up to 12 words before & after that. Then, Drs kept ignoring her constant ear infections and breathing problems. That all has passed now, but only says 4 words. Wont say anything else. She can hear fine we have had 3 ear test taken and shown to be perfect. Can anyone help me? Whats wrong? How can I get her to talk again? She is super smart. She knows how to do everything, where everything is. I feel like Im failing her bc she cant communicate.
Answer: Dont' panic; children develop at different rates. The speech setback can certainly be explained by the traumatic medcial conditions she has experienced in her short 17 months. By all means consult with a Develpment Specialist, but try not to communicate your desperation to the child. Physically she seems to be ok, so just continue with your tlc and I am sure she will respond in time. By the way, are there other children around? That could prove to be a great stimulus for her.

child wont apologize?
My son is six and generally pretty well behaved. BUT if he accidentally hurts one of his friends or breaks a toy he wont/cant say hes sorry. He freezes and cant speak. Today he was dancing crazy with his friend and he banged the other kid in the nose with his head. It was an accident but I still wanted him to say he was sorry and he wouldnt. We came home, I helped him write a note that said "sorry. I didnt mean to hurt you." We walked back to the childs house with the note and gave him a little toy of my sons. Is that acceptable? Other parents dont seem to understand.
My son is shy and has a lot of trouble speaking up in certain situations (when hes put on the spot). Has anyone else dealt with this?? Because he cant say "sorry" I end up having to make a big deal over something that is usually very minor.
Answer: If he's not saying sorry out of embarrassment or "freezing up," as you say, it's probably just a phase that he will grow out of. Continue to encourage him to say it but if he doesn't, writing a note sounds like a good thing to do. You are being consistent by not letting him "off the hook" either way.
