GREENER ACRES; Why Are They Greener Than We Are?
1. The headquarters of the federal environment agency in Dessau, Germany, occupies a low-slung building on the edge of an abandoned gasworks. Dessau, a center for munitions production during the war, was virtually obliterated by Allied bombs. The Immigration Equation
The day I met George Borjas, cloistered in his office at the John F. My first chapter- constructive criticism?
Ch. 1
My coffee-brown eyes took in my surroundings in glances of wonderment and curiosity. It seemed so strange that I was finally a minor niner at Rockwell High, and I still couldnt honestly believe it. The gargantuan building loomed a few yards ahead of me. It was made of crusty, mushroom-colored bricks, and had brand new white windows installed in the sides; glass gleaming from a few cheap bottles of Windex, seemingly. The roof was tiled a nasty olive green, a shade darker than your average puke. And the huge arched entrance didnt even have doors. All in all, it was your slightly-less-than-average school.
I walked inside and gaped at the vicinity, making sure to keep my mouth closed so I wouldnt look like an idiot. I dont know why. I guess going to a new school, finally, was just pretty exciting to me. First hour was about to begin, and I had no idea where anything was, so I started rapidly through the halls to my best guess as to where my locker was.
My first guess was wrong.
My second guess was more wrong.
My third guess turned out to be right, though. A quick glance at my watch told me that I had about three minutes and 45 seconds left, so I quickly opened my locker with dexterous expertise, grabbed two notebooks and a pencil, and imprecisely shoved my backpack in as far as it would go. Slamming my locker shut, I turned and navigated my way through everyone else in the hall, trying not to drop anything.
The halls emptied soon enough, which gave me a better view while trying to locate my first class, but was only one more reminder that passing period would end very, very soon.
As if to emphasize my thoughts, the bell rang.
Great.
I finally saw the room number I was looking for at the end of the hall, painted right above a teak door in what looked like bright turquoise fingerpaints. 408. Speed-walking the rest of the way, I tentatively put my hand on the doorknob and turned my wrist. I heard a click and the door opened. I walked inside, and my eyes scanned the classroom for an empty desk. It was then that I noticed name plates on each desk. I just about stomped my foot in frustration and slapped my head, but stopped before I could make an idiot of myself. Dont fall apart on me now, I thought to myself inaudibly. Now, while everyone was already seated and waiting, and watching my every move might I add, I had to walk around the whole room looking for my tiny, trifling name plate. I sighed and walked against the wall to my left, passing each desk, looking for my name.
After ten agonizing seconds, I heard someone start coughing up a storm against the opposite wall. It diverted everyones attention away from me, thank God, and when I looked over to see who it was, I connected eyes with the cougher and he gave me a solid look and pointed at the desk to his immediate right. I laughed a little.
Which made everyone look at me again.
I turned my head to the wall and flushed. At least I knew where my seat was. I walked over speedily, and sat down in a deep, red chair connected to a wooden desk, atop which sat a name plate that read "Tuyen R." I glanced to the next desk over, at the guy that coughed earlier; probably the only person in the room that I actually knew. Poncho grinned at me for a fleeting second and winked.
"Thanks for the signal," I whispered.
"Thanks for showing up," he replied in a tone just as quiet. "You wouldnt make me sit through the first day of Algebra by myself, now would you?"
"Maybe," I said. Then I smiled. "But just to see you suffer."
I held my smile and he grew one, too. And class started.
Poncho and I both had gone to middle school together, and elementary school, as well. We came to know eachother well, and though we werent totally best-of-friends, we hung out outside of school and did projects together and things like that. Neither of us especially cared about school, and so the entire class while our teacher, Mrs. Kirby, read from the book of guidelines that had to be read at the beginning of each school year, we passed notes.
I know, very mature.
But we didnt really get in trouble. Passing notes isnt exactly the worst thing a teacher could find a student doing.
There were five minutes left in class- and we were still reading from the handbook- when Mrs. Kirby paused in her reading, and started walking in our general direction. After I realized that she was coming up to Poncho and I, I figured we had about ten seconds before she was by our desks.
"Red alert!" I whispered softly, but in a forceful tone.
Poncho got the message faster than most others would. Wed done this before; almost gotten caught, that is. And we had a system.
My friend quickly shoved the note in his mouth, chewed for a second or two, and swallowed. I know, gross. But if hed just stuck it in his pocket or inside a notebook, the teacher would have seen. Dont ask me why. My best guess is th
at teachers are actually mutant human hybrids with X-ray vision.
Okay, probably not.
But still, swallowing the evidence was the only truly effective way to keep a teacher from reading your note aloud to the class. And eating a fistful of paper is a small price to pay for keeping your reputation.
Nevertheless, I saw Poncho gag. Hey, I thought, at least I stopped using gel pens.
We straightened our posture, and tried to inconspicuously turn the pages in our handbooks to the right one, but we were out of time.
Mrs. Kirby cleared her throat. When she spoke, it was in a nasal voice that pierced through my eardrums like nails on a chalkboard. "Sancho," she said, glancing to Ponchos name plate. His real name is Sancho. Sancho Fierro. But he goes by Poncho. "Would you like to read where we left off?" the teacher questioned.
All eyes were on him.
"No thank you, Mrs. Kirby," Poncho said confidently. "But thank you for offering," he finished with a cocky tone. Poncho
gestured towards the front of the room. "Would you like to continue?"
Mrs. Kirby glared at him. It was only then that I noticed the irony in her name; Mrs. Kirby reminded me very much of the little pink puffball I so lovingly played as in video games so much of the time. Her skin was the shade of coral, and she had very rosy cheeks. She was also a little bit... round. Just like Kirby, I thought. I chuckled under my breath.
I took it back five seconds later. Too late, though. The words were already out.
Mrs. Kirby turned towards me. "Would you like to read, Tuyen?" she said, not dropping her glare once.
My answer was just as cocky as Ponchos. "Nope. Id rather not, actually," I said. "But I could really use some air conditioning in here," I mumbled with growing enthusiasm, "and a map. You would not believe how hard it is to find your way around this place."
The teacher didnt drop her hateful glare the entire day, from what I heard. But the rest of the day was much
the same for all of my classes. I was late six more times- oops- and all we did was read the monotonous handbook. Before I knew it, it was 2:45 and the bell rang.
The school day was over. As soon as the bell rang, I left my Latin class tentatively; not really wanting to go home, but not really wanting to stay, either. I went to my locker and stuffed my backpack full of all of my notebooks, writing utensils, and new textbooks, zipped it shut, and started walking towards the open entryway leading outside. There were jumbled voices all around me of people chattering to themselves and to their friends, but I didnt listen to that. All I heard were my footsteps. Thump, thump, thump. I concentrated on them to keep my mind off of other, more worrisome things that I knew I really shouldnt be thinki-
I had just walked into someone while concentrating on my footsteps. I felt really awful when I realized that whoever it was- it was a he- had dropped all of his notebooks and folders. Knee
ling down to try and help pick them up, I banged my head into his. Ouch. It hurt. I could only imagine that his head hurt more. So now, not only had I made some poor guy drop his books, I probably gave him a concussion. Man, I was really on a roll today, wasnt I?
I lifted my head up and started apologizing. "Oh, oh, Im really sorry. Really. Really. Sorry."
The stranger looked up, too. And I got a good look at him. He had light green, narrow eyes that had a distant twinkle to them. And his hair was bright red. He wasnt a natural redhead. Well, actually, he couldve been. But I couldnt tell what natural color his hair was, because it was dyed beyond recognition. It was messy, too, and looked like it hadnt been combed or washed in weeks. He had freckles, and was very skinny and somewhat tan. But in his face, I saw a look of determination that ran deep. He definitely wasnt a freshman; he looked more like a junior. Or a senior. I dont know. All I knew was that I liked him, de
spite his rugged look. Maybe even because of his rugged look.
"Thats okay," he said. He held his hand out sideways. "Ben," he said, obviously introducing himself.
I didnt catch on. I didnt say anything, either. I was just staring at him in some mixture of admiration and bashfulness.
"Um... and your name?" Ben began saying.
I caught on. "Oh. Um. Im Turtle." I grabbed his hand in a stiff grip and shook it. As soon as I let go, I saw him shake his hand; like hed just written a 500 word essay non-stop. Oops. Maybe I grabbed it a little too hard.
The corner of Bens lip twitched, and a sly grin crept across his face. My knees started going weak at his sweet-as-honey smile, but thankfully I got a hold of them before I fell. "Turtle?" he asked.
"Its a nickname." I said, embarrassed.
"Well, Turtle," Ben started. "See you around."
By the times I got my wits back, he was gone.
"See ya," I mumbled to myself.
The walk home from school was uneventful. I
listened to the thumping of my feet again, but this time without tripping up any cute guys.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
This was going to be an interesting year; I could tell.

Im still working on it. Its not supposed to be a romance book, its fantasy/adventure, but Im just introducing the main characters life first before I go into the plot. Opinions & comments, please!
Answer: I think you've got a lot of good description, but you tend to present it all in a solid chunk. If you space it out a bit, it'll seem more natural.
I don't know if that's how you wrote it or if putting it on Y!A just messed up the formatting, but you really should indent at the beginning of each paragraph. It'll make it easier to read (and less annoying the grammar snobs).
There were a few places--I noticed it most near the beginning--where it felt like you just whipped out a thesaurus and decided to use some cool long words so you sound smart. I know it's not likely you did that, I'm just saying it feels that way when I read it.
Anyway, sounds good so far!
I never would have guessed this was a fantasy/adventure story, lol.
