Has the United States lost its competitive edge?
Japan- dominate the automobile and the electronics industry, ford and gm are in the dump while toyota and honda are the worlds preference for cars, even lexus and acura are the preference for luxury cars these days, and have you ever been to japan..they are light years ahead of america when it comes to electronic gadgets..
Taiwan, South Korea- also dominant in electronics but especially strong with mobile phones..phones that get popular in the us only do so generally a few years after south korea
Singapore, Norway- have higher gdp per capitas than the average american
Germany- dominates the luxury car industry with bmw and mercedez, although it is losing its edge in this to japan and south korea
China- manufacturing capital of the world..once held by the united states in the early 20th century, the number of olympic gold medals awarded here has greatly increased especially in gymnastics and is a challenge to the american supremacy
India- up and coming super power with great potential especially in the IT and software sector, produces some of the brightest scientists and engineers in the world especially from indian institute of technology or as bill gates calls it "harvard + stanford + yale + mit combined"..four of the ten of the richest people in the world are indians.
United Kingdom- country with the worlds best universities..oxford, cambridge, london school of economics, all these universities put ivy league universities in america in the dust bin
What does the united states still have going that makes it more dominant than the rest of the world
if you also noticed, when obama had talks and negotiations with hu jintao of china, china made much fewer concessions than ever before..signs of a shift in global power already?
Answer: 1) U.S. is still and would stay the most powerful country in the world. Having said that, the other countries are rising, especially China. So in relative sense the U.S. is gonna fall, but U.S. will stay the most powerful in this century. As for the concessions, neither did US do any favors to the Chinese. Concessions are not done one way. It is now economic hard time and everyone can only take care of themselves at the moment.
2) Power, in international politics, can be defined as the ability of a country to advance own's national objectives and interest. It is provided by economic output, financial leveraging ability, military , technological lead and research ability, alliances, position in international institutions, geographical location, natural resources endowment, quantity and quality of population, and so on. Therefore, the examples that you just gave are all but a very small part of power and are only in the economics and production aspect.
3) And about the examples, I have to clarify that some of them aren't even a real lead in those aspects: Dominating in manufacturing is in fact occupying only the low end of a production chain. India's IT development is good but this area is exactly the trump of U.S.. Luxuries commodities are just toys for the rich and no power in world politics.
4) As for universities, the Oxbridge plus one to two more is all you can say abut UK's universities, while U.S. has dozens more. As a respectable country, yes surely they would have their own top universities for their nation. The reason why we only know well about the UK ones is that we use the English language. It is our problem that we don't know about the top universities for France, for Germany, for Russia, for China, for Japan, and so on. Guess what, their political and social elites did not do their college in US or UK.

p.s i live in india and im and indian !
Answer: The best to get answers to these questions is to go to the websites for the universities you are interested in and look under "Admissions."
Depending on the school you apply to you will have to take either the SAT (scholastic aptitude test) or ACT aptitude test. I know the SAT is offered at US consulates because I took mine in Copenhagen, Denmark. These tests measure language, math, and critical thinking. You will have to take TOEFL to show that you read and write English well enough to do college-level work. If you don't get a high score, the college will ask you to take English language classes. There are websites that explain what the test are and how to apply for them, and there are practice tests available. Just google the test name and "test."
It probably won't matter whether whether you went highschool in India or Singapore - the important part will be your English skills and grades.
Good luck

Answer: Brooke Shields went to Princeton. Although she had an excellent education before that, the reason she was a suitable candidate was not her educational background, but her career. If you can be an international superstar, you can choose what Ivy-league college you want to attend. There are hundreds of students with perfect grades and test scores who are declined admission to Harvard in favor of applicants with lower grades. The schools don't just want the best scores, they want a diverse and varied student body. Take something special with you and you will be a more likely candidate than a student with perfect scores.

How do I get into Yale Law School? Please help and thank you!!!! :D?
Im a thirteen year old currently studying at Raffles Girls School, one of the best schools in Singapore (: I have very high aspirations and I have been dreaming to go to Yale Law School since I was young.
However, I do not know when I can apply. Is it after JC? Or is it after university? As I live in Singapore, we do not have grade 8 and stuff like that.
It would be extremely generous if you would help me with my problem please :D I want to start working really hard and it would be brilliant if I have a clearer idea of the admissions to Yale.
Furthermore, it would be awesome if you could offer some tips to help me get into Yale. Thank you very much!!! I am extremely grateful! (:
Merci bien.
Answer: Hey Pooh Bear Girl,
Here are the basic requirements to be able to apply to law school (any U.S. law school, not just Yale):
1. You need to have finished high school, and have obtained a four-year undergraduate degree at a college or university.
2. You need to have taken the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
However, there is a lot more to it than that. Keep in mind, though, that there isn't a specific formula for getting into Yale Law. People come from many different paths and walks of life at YLS; there isn't a specific college class you should take, or a college major you should have. What you need to possess is a stellar academic record (and I mean stellar--student admitted to YLS typically have college GPAs of at least 3.8 out of 4.0), an exceptional LSAT score (172+, preferably 175+ -- the test itself is scored from 120 to 180), excellent recommendations from your college professors, and a résumé that shows involvement (no specific type of internship or activity is preferred over another--what you should focus on is demonstrating commitment to and leadership in two or three specific causes over a number of years, rather than sporadic participation in 10+ activities).
Even with all that, admission will not be a definite thing. You will still face some tough competition if you're looking for admission into Yale, because competition for law schools of that caliber is intense for anyone, regardless of their credentials. Yale has the lowest admissions percentage of all ABA-approved law schools (just over 7%) for a reason.
Focus on doing the following during your academic years in order to create a solid applicant profile that will put you at an advantage in the law school application process:
1. Pick a college major that will require a lot of reading- and research-intensive classes (for example: political science, history, economics, or sociology). This will not only prepare you for law classes (which themselves are incredibly research- and reading-heavy), but it will also demonstrate to law schools, when you apply, that you can handle the academic load of law school.
2. Keep an upward grade trend throughout college. This means that your grades either get stronger as you go through school, or start off strong and remain there for all 4 years of college. Most law schools will want to see GPAs of 3.5 or above (the closer you can get to a 4.0, the better). If you get a B during your freshman year, it's not a deal-breaker; your focus should be to keep your grades as high as you can get them.
3. Take a challenging class load: Intro classes are okay for freshman and (maybe) sophomore year of college, but once you get to junior and senior year, your focus should be on upper-level classes and seminars that allow you to really hone in and focus on your specific interests within the major. And, as always, keep your grades up throughout.
4. Establish rapport with your professors (particularly during your junior and senior years of college). You can do this by attending office hours, working for them as a research assistant, and talking to them after class. They will be the ones writing your letters of recommendation, and will only be able to write effective, overwhelmingly positive ones is if they have specific, anecdotal knowledge of you and can favorably compare you to other students in your class.
5. Work on your extracurriculars. Don't worry about being a part of 30 student groups; instead, focus on 2 or 3. Become a part and get involved during your freshman and sophomore years, and then obtain leadership positions in them during your junior and senior years.
6. Take the LSAT either the summer after junior year or the fall of your senior year of college. This will allow you to get the LSAT out of the way and apply as early in the admissions cycle as possible, which is incredibly beneficial to your overall chances.
I would also not focus exclusively on YLS as your only law school choice. Branch out a little. Research law schools and become familiar with their LSAT and GPA requirements, as well as their acceptance percentages. A great place to start is the LSAC Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools: http://officialguide.lsac.org
For now, focus on doing very well in high school and getting into a great college or university. Once you're there, start applying the tips above to create a solid law school applicant profile.
I know I gave you a lot of info--I hope some of it helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions--I'm glad to help!
