So my Asian friend has parents who are not overly strict, do you think that he will be a failure in life?
So I have a friend who is an Indian guy (India), he came to America at the age of 7 and his parents were a bit strict at first but he recently graduated high school. He finished with a 3.4 GPA, made a 1950 on his SAT without studying and will be going to his local 4 year university, issue is that his first two years of high school he didnt focus as much on grades but his final two years he did. He was a C student the first two years and an A student the final two years.
On his own free will he changed his view on grades. His parents wont let him drink or have sex or anything like that, they really dont want him dating till college but they didnt beat him for making bad grades. Other Asian parents say that he will fail in life and not get anywhere because his parents did a poor job.
Thing is I notice that he is so different from other Asian and Indian kids. He basically hangs with all types of race groups, he gets along with everyone, doesnt have an accent, girls say he looks a lot better than them, he walks straight with his head forward instead of walking down and he has no problems making friends. Thing is that he is not the 4.0 GPA 2400 SAT score student like a lot of Asians are.
Do you think that compared to them, he will be a failure and a disappointment in life? He tells me he has plans of making a 4.0 GPA in college and transferring to a top university.
Answer: It depends how you define success. Money, grades, and important jobs don't mean squat if you are miserable all the time. I think some parents who were born in different countries where there aren't a lot of opportunity drive their children very hard in order to encourage their children to have lots of money. Which in their case equates to success. A lot of people equate money to sucess.
To me, being happy, healthy and surrounding yourself with people you love is a much more successful than having the best grades, the best job and the most money. Having pride in what you do is important, and doing things well is important, but only if it makes you happy. There are too many rich/smart/successful but terribly unhappy and lonely people out there.
Sounds like your friend has a much rounder view of what he wants out of life and enjoys his life a lot more than some of your other friends who spend all their time striving to be the best. Nobody should walk with their head down, and everyone should have the opportunity to make friends. It's about balance.

What should I do Im very happy within my relationship but ready to live my own life with out them.?
I am 24 years old just gave birth to a healthy baby girl about four days ago. Ive been living on my own since I was 18 when I first started my job I still work full time today I am also a student at our local university. My brother who is 20 has been living with me since he was age 17 when my mom decided to move out of the home and in with her loser boyfriend. My moms bf is about 28 years old he does not work has no car and lives off my mom who is 45. This guy even beat on my younger brother earlier this year and you guessed it my mom is still with this guy. I am so afraid that she is going to run my fiance away. I just dont understand her she will come visit and sit around him and pretend that shes just so crazy about him and "likes him very much". But than she will go home get on the phone with my grandma and talk negative about him. My fiance treats me good he is one of the best. He has been nothing but supportive my entire pregnancy he really goes out of his way for me and treats me like a queen. My mother never approaches me directly with her negative words but I catch it from grandma. She will some how someone way just happen to through up something so I went as far as asking both my mother and grandma what their problem with him was and I got "HOW CAN I SPEAK ABOUT HIM WHEN I HARDLY KNOW HIM". My fiance has never said anything but I fear there actions may steer him away. What should I do Im very happy within my relationship but ready to live my own life with out them.
Answer: Don't worry for what hasn't happened yet. It's also pretty unlikely that her just complaining to your grandmother will run him off.
Your mother sounds a little toxic, but you are old enough to be on your own and have been. While i wouldn't go so far as to bar her from your home, you certainly could at any point you feel she is too far out of line.
People talk. We can't control anything about that but our reaction to it. It might help you to ask your grandmother not to repeat to you what your mother says regarding your fiance (or anything else, for that matter). If she wants to say something to your face, be open to hear it.
Don't buy into gossip too much. Taking it seriously is one of the things that fuels it. The less weight you give it, the less fun it will be for your mother. The problem could also be with your grand mother passing it on. Maybe she is adding a little to it...?
Almost all relationships have some meddling relatives to deal with. Worry about building something healthy and strong with your man and this kind of thing will not effect it. If he is one of the best, he is almost immune to such nonsense. If it becomes truly out of hand or leaks over into your own family life with him, you and he can decide together that your mother will not be visiting.
We can choose our families, believe it or not. Your mother has problems. You can decide to love her from afar, not to reward ugly behavior and simply separate yourself from her if you have to. i wouldn't do it over gossip, myself, and having just had a baby you are tender and sensitive. Try to focus on your new life as much as possible, to be positive around those you love and maybe your mother will respond to your own good example.

Okay guys so I have an embarrassing problem.
I like women from a different ethnic group than me. Well there is a part two of the problem, I like them so much that I am not attracted to women of any other ethnic group unless they look similar. Basically I like Latinas. I know they come in all colors but I am just attracted to them period. Well for months I have been asking "Do Latinas like Indian guys" and I have been getting answers in the extremes.
So I am a first year student at a local university. I am still with my parents for my first two years of college and after my second year I plan on transferring to a more diverse university and hopefully there I can find the Latina of my dreams.
I am just breaking down in a way because I really want to date a Latina but dont know if I will ever get to date one period....
My parents are okay with me dating interracial but I really want to date a Latina and I have been patient for about two years now...
Thing is I have never seen an Indian guy with a Latina before and it really just hurts me because I believe there may be a reason for it. I am just so broken down in a way because I keep wondering about this.......
If I am patient will my chance come to be with a Latina?
Answer: The first answerer is PARTIALLY correct, their men do hate it but then again don't all men hate their women being with men of a different group?
Imagine how much hate White men give to Black men who marry White girls that look good. Many show open hatred and everything, using that mentality won't get us anywhere now will it?
As I said BEFORE, just try not to think about it, when you least expect it will come, be patient and carry on with life. And there are Latinas out there that love Indian guys.

Will high school students have fun at my motivation speech; bike gear, jokes and games...?
Im 32, and Im going to speak at a local high school but I very much remember what it was like being in high school and I dont want to be that boring guy that I would have ignored when I was a teen. I want to be myself and show the students you can professional and still have fun/style. What do you think about my format...is it too much?
I come on stage wearing my full motorcyle race gear with helmet(chromed visor). I flip up the visor and say...(Southern accent)"Good mornin folks! Ma name is Fred Twiddleneck and Im here to change yer life!". Then I take of the helmet and the jacket and pants and underneath I have on a GQ type 2 piece suit and tie. Straight corporate looking. Then I say (Jamaican accent)"Yo wha gwaan yo!?""Everybody cool?". Then in my normal business tone of voice "You cant judge a book by its cover! Adults sometimes make assumption about you based on stereotype and them forgetting what its like to be a teenager and they are sometimes wrong. You also make assumptions about how "stuffy" corporate life is based on TV but you are wrong sometimes too. Im here to school you on whats really going on in the working world." I then go through my story from school rebel to award winner by 11th grade, then Air force, Then success on Wall Street M-F at racing motorcycles and extreme sports on the weekends. Then I talk about dreams, reality, motivation, being your best and taking action. In the beginning I will announce a game; randomly during my speak I will say things like "I can see you in my shadow...wanna jump up in my Lamborghini gallardo" a the students will have to figure out the artist that said that and jump up and shout the name first. Maybe there will be a prize too. What do you think? Fun and cool or corny and boring?
If you dont like my ideas can you suggest what would be cool and fun? I think maybe my ideas may be more for younger students and my memories of high school are blurring with Junior High memories. Personally I think Id love it if a motorcycle racer came to my school but Ive always loved bikes from a very young age. I do accept that I may not remember things clearly and also that times have changed but please school me in because a lot of students can really benefit from what I have to say but only if they listen. I wanna tell them what I wish I was told when I was young, but I my 16 year old self may not have listened to this unless there was something interesting or entertaining otherwise we would have given this a big "Whatever!" or worst "Booooo!!!". What would be fun?
Answer: The flashy costumes, the feigned accents, the cliched expressions. The cheezy, passe lyrics! With a performance like this, being "ignored" by these teens will be the least of your worries.
Tone it down a bit, or risk being pelted with mass amounts of spitwads.

How to Act During a Job Interview?
I know this will seem silly, but this is only my second job to have. My first job was given to me by a family members mother, lol.
Im a college student and generally dont dress to kill just to go to two or three classes and come home. I have an interview at the local Wal*Mart tomorrow. How should I act? What should I wear?
Thank you so much for taking time to read this! :)
Oh, and how early should I arrive? 10-15 minutes early?
Answer: I interviewed there once. I wore black pants, black heeled granny boots, and a button down sweater. I did get the job, but I turned it down. They were very hazy about the shifts. When I asked which shift it would be, they said I had to work whichever shift they wanted. So it could have been day, then overnight, then night, etc. I wanted a solid schedule.

If a police officer doesnt arrest me then and there, can he or she come back a week later to arrest me?
well I am in a pickle right now. I will tell the story now....
I was driving on a six lane( three lanes in one direction, three in another) road that leads to a four way intersection. I was in the middle lane, trying to go to the farthest lane to the right to go straight for several hundred feet before turning right. Well, before the light at the four way intersection, I cut across the grass( in front of the lane) in order to get to the other lane, instead of waiting for the car in front of me to go to turn my signal on to the right and turn. I was unaware of a local police officer right behind me. I checked my rear-view mirror, and his lights were on, and I attempted to park the truck in a safe manner for both of us. I had my emergency flashers on when I turned right in discovering that he was pulling me over, and I had to travel like thirty feet more to turn left( I dont know if you can see turn signals when your emergency flashers are on?) and get out of the road.
The problem is, I had a $30 bag of weed on me, in the middle thing of the truck. My drivers license had been chewed by my dog( no pun intended, he literally chewed and mutilated it) so I gave him another identification card ( student id) for better clarification. I forgot to give him my registration and insurance, so when he asked for it, I gave it to him. He asked if I had any weapons or illegal substances on me, and i said no.
Everything was fine until apparently another officer showed up ( or that officer called him, im still not quite sure) as a k-9 unit truck with the dog in the back. Now when I saw him, I hoped he would go away soon, so I remained calm, but after he asked if he could search the truck( weapons or illegal substances?) I knew I had to be honest and admit it, because even I could smell it in my truck, and if I could smell it, the first officer can smell it, and if the first officer smells it, he will inform a k-9 unit to come and search. so that being the case, im not stupid and incompetent, I agreed knowing that they knew I had something.
Now the first officer did his usual questioning, hopefully you are aware of what this is, to avoid lengthening what is already a long story, and told me that they would cut me a deal. I would not go to jail if I would tell them who I got it from. I told them I would not tell them the name of who I got it from, and they did not react angrily. Then they proposed I would not go to jail if I could report to them in a week( one week only) of a suspicious person who has either committed a felony crime or a drug dealer selling more than 20 grams of any illegal substance. If I did not give them something in a week,or if i stopped communicating with them after a week, they would come back and arrest me.
Okay so finally, here are my questions: if they didnt already arrest, can they legally come back and arrest me a week later for this misdemeanor charge? my sisters boyfriend has a friend who was once a local police officer and he said to my sister or her boyfriend that theyre just trying to scare me, and will not arrest me. My sister suggested that I ignore them for this week, for the worst they could do is take me to court to find me guilty. In which case I most likely will not go to jail. However I would like a third partys opinion here. Can they really come back and arrest me? Or were they really trying to scare me? I do not sell weed, and I use the most minimal amount ( less than an eighth). technically I am a criminal, but what criminal only buys a thirty bag and smokes it to himself?
Answer: Yes they can if they have reason to or enough evidence to make an arrest

Early Admission Scheme
For a vast of complicated reasons, granted by the number of Secondary 6
students on the rest, Early Admission Scheme screws up students’ courage to
accomplish outstanding HKCEE results in order to be admitted to universities
after Form Six. There can be no argument that Early Admission Scheme is a good
news for gifted student. And with gifted student comes elite university.
Without Early Admission Scheme, local universities may not be able to garner
more talented candidates. But with Early Admission Scheme, there is an enormous
potential for Hong Kong’s universities to enhance their global positions. In
the meantime, Early Admission Scheme Affects these parties. Secondary schools
will lose the bulk of excellent students, leading problems of lack of student
leaders in their school. Moreover, being admitted to university earlier,
students may not be able to familiar with, which, sadly, are all entirely
strange new environments, so they should brood over the whole problem
intensively with patience and persistence in order to spring out the right
decision. Undeniably, students who have to take the HKAL will compete more
drastically---as this hot potato---students with outstanding HKCEE results may
occupy some popular subjects.
To begin with, admission of cutting-edge students can benefit secondary
school. Simultaneously, the problem of mixed abilities in one class can be
alleviated. Having different comprehensive and analysis abilities, it is
difficult for teachers to prepare lessons. To be honest, weak students will be
bundle of nerves during the class, with some super-intellectual students. Not
concentrating during the class, can weak students be able to catch up with others?
The answer is obvious---NO! Admission of outstanding students can weed out
these disadvantages, which are the burdens of secondary schools. Meanwhile, yet
Early Admission Scheme may bring some drawbacks to secondary schools. Given
that high-quality students have left these schools, the average standard of
students maybe lower. Although principals have full control over the enrollment
of other schools’ students, the standard of students are still tumbling. A
prestigious school can’t wean itself of rooftop students, Without elites, the
process was---and continues to be----plunging.
On the other, the students participating in this scheme can have many
advantages. HKAL is not the same as HKCEE---it’ll be donkey work---that’s
reason why most of the students don’t like HKAL. Imagine the scheme. Imagine
if, thanks to Early Admission Scheme, students can rid their roads of HKAL,
which is contended the world’s most difficult AL. In addition, talented
students can save the tuition fee for one year and enter the workforce earlier.
However, the gifted students may not well-prepared enough for university. They
have one year less secondary education, so, they can’t maneuver the necessary
knowledge and reach the prerequisite, which is exceedingly useful and essential
for them. Going forward, absence of a group of out standing students can let
the competition become less vigorous. With the leaving of rooftop students, the
remain students can get higher grade in the public exams. As a consequence,
they can have more chances to be admitted by the university.
On the contrary, it is cruel but a solid fact that some secondary 6
popular subjects have been occupied. Being promoted to secondary 6, gifted
students can have the first choice to select their desired subjects, none of
whom schools will disagree. A multitude of often complex factors will never
affect their choices. Indeed, the other students will be affected by them as
less places are available. Normal students should put in place to lose their
favorite subjects.
All in all, in the fact of such over whelming completion, Early
Admission Scheme may be the happiness or sorrow to students. There can be no
quibbling about the advantage of cutting-edge students. I applaud this.
Nevertheless, weak candidates may face more challenging future. Additionally,
this scheme has resulted in a labeling effect, which is the drawback of
education system. So concerted effect must be made to intensify co-operation of
school and students, spur innovation and usher in a new idea era of the reform
of academic structure. By changing education system, and changing the mindset
of parents, we can change Hong Kong.
Answer: I don't want to go through your whole essay, because it will start to sound like my writing, not yours. I will make some suggestions for the first few sentences.
For a vast of complicated reasons, granted by the number of Secondary 6 students on the rest, Early Admission Scheme screws up students’ courage to accomplish outstanding HKCEE results in order to be admitted to universities after Form Six. There can be no argument that Early Admission Scheme is a good news for gifted student. And with gifted student comes elite university.
First, you need to insert a word like majority between the words "vast of" in the opening sentence. It doesn't make sense to say, "For a vast of complicated reasons.....". Next, don't use the wording "screws up" it is slang and not appropriate for a formal essay. Also, the phrase "And with gifted student comes elite university" is not a complete sentence. Instead you could say something like, "Gifted students have the opportunity to attend elite universities with the Early Admission Scheme". You should not begin a sentence in a formal essay with the word "and". Finally, unless Early Admission Scheme is a title it should not be capitalized. It sounds like a phrase, but I'm not familiar with it.
Hope I helped a little.

My parents dont let me hang out with my friends, what should I do?
I am a 16 year old girl in grade 11, and I come from an Islamic home. My parents are VERY protective of me and have given me a sheltered life...literally. I am thankful for everything they have given me, its just that at times it feels like I cannot breathe with it all!
What I mean is, if there is anything I want to do (i.e. go shopping, go to the library and read a book, even go for a walk outside) it always ends up being with either my mom or my older sister... but still, it really feels like too much sometimes because they are both one and the same. It just makes it worse that they like things I dont like and I like things that they dont like (i.e. I hate baking, they love it. I want to paint at home or do something creative, and they dont have the time to take me out to get materials for it, and then they think itll make a huge mess when I really do not). Back in the day (grades 7-8ish) I would make some tiny cleaning mistakes and I would never be allowed to do the same thing.
When I am not at school or any school-related event/program, my parents treat me as if I am their full-on responsibility-their baby.
They told me back in grade 9 to get involved in school activities so that I wouldnt feel so bored all the time and spend every day at home doing nothing but watch TV or go on the internet. So I joined everything I was interested in and got myself active.
At school, I lead the Social Justice group--I started it last year. I am a part of the announcement crew, the environmental club, the grad committee, DECA, yearbook committee, and every other special event that comes up. And the thing is, I dont have a small participating role in each group-- I am on the executive board of each one of them and end up having to spend every hour of the weekdays just working on all of this on top of maintaining a good mark in all my courses. The staff of my school treat me like I am one of them- they respect me and joke around with me all the time. The junior students at my school, in a way, know who I am even though I barely know any of them. And they know me because of how involved I am. Next year I will be on Student Council and I am running for the position of Student Trustee come this May... and I have a high possibility of even getting this position.
I have been given the chance just this last month to go to my schools semi formal and to go see the Hannah Montana movie... but the thing is, both of these events were completely supervised and I just feel as if the people all around me can see me for who I have become rather than my parents and older sister seeing that. And this just makes me really upset.
I was talking to my mom about summer today, and slightly mentioned hanging out with my friends. She said only once in a while... and that would mean just an hour or so at a public place. And as soon as she said that, she told me to take a course over the summer for sewing or something. First off, I have Fashion this semester and I really dont need to learn to sew if I already know how... secondly, I already have huge plans for the summer with either doing a bursary lab position at the local university (I find out if I get it by the end of May, same time as the Student Trustee position) or summer school, where I will be repeating a grade 12 math course in order to upgrade my mark. Thats already enough heavy duty work there :(
What I REALLY want to do on top of all these awesome activities (which I am very thankful for) is just breathe a little! I have declined so manyyyy other positions just because I want to have a little time to myself- but I really end of having time all alone by myself doing nothing. Now that is NOT fun stuff considering I love to be social.
I honestly do not have fun at home anymore. Like literally, I feel bad saying this because they have given me so much, but I would like to do some things on my OWN, be independent for a few hours and just do whatever I want. I feel embarassed nowadays when my mom takes me shopping and to Tim Hortons and I always see my friends there relaxing and wasting time--- but the thing is that they are making memories. Silly, simple memories that will mean something to them later in their lifetime. I want to be able to do that.
At this point in time, I honestly think that I have done a lot without having done the simplest things that need to be done in life.
Please dont get me wrong through all my words... I have given you guys all the details of whats going on in my life because they are what make me as a person. I need you to know all of this because It will help in having my question answered.
Now my question is: what should I do?
I feel like I am in the wrong here but all I do nowadays is pray to have this solved in some positive way. Even today, my mom knew that something was bugging me but its just that whenever I bring up the topic they think I am going through a teenage phase of nonsense.
But honestly,

Parents dont want to buy a V8?
Hi. Im a college student and my parents are helping me with purchasing my first car. They are paying for it and I will be paying them back over time. Sounds perfect right? Not quite. Im very picky about vehicles and our maximum spending range is $6000. I live in Madison, WI so the market is fairly limited. My parents say it needs to be within 75 miles so if it breaks down we can take it back to be covered by warranty.
All reasonable but the problem is, like I said, Im very picky about cars. The way I look at it, this is an investment, and the only car I will be using until I am financially independent. Anyways these are the criteria that must be met:
1) black or silver
2) have a cd player
3) be luxury (power everything, leather seats, heated seats preferred etc.)
4) look nice [the only cars i like are sedans or coupes, cadillac (not catera), bmw, lexus (dont really like ES and no others are readily available in my price range), or mercedes (dont like c-class)]
So, thats a lot of information.
Ill summarize.
I want a car, ideally a black Cadillac STS with a cd player and heated seats, but it tends to only come in V8.
I actually found a 2003 STS with a V6, but it only costs $5000. My parents, and Im a bit skeptical as well, are convinced theres something horribly wrong with it. Is there a way to get the dealer to be honest? HA! Or is it really that great of a buyers market?!
I search every day on craigslist, cars.com, and the local newspaper.
I either need to convince them a V8 will be acceptable, or find a car that both parties can agree on.
Advice? (Dont tell me not to be so picky, if Im spending money, I need to like it!!!)

I want to perform. No one will let me. *pouts*?
So Im in my junior year of high school, and this is about the time when the teachers and counselors really get on our asses about AP tests, and senior year registrations and college applications. All this has gotten me thinking about what Im going to do after high school. Im getting pretty anxious about it because Im caught between what I want to do (perform to put it simply) and what everyone else is doing/what everyone expects from me. Im a pretty good student, Im within the top 20 of my class, so Ive been labeled with the term "college-bound" since 7th grade, and Ive obediently followed that ambition. However, Ive realized a few things this year. First, teachers and counselors were being more specific when they said "college-bound"; they always imply that Im going to become a doctor, an engineer or a lawyer. None of these careers interest me in the slightest, not even the general direction they are in. Secondly, the things Ive been passionate about are not about degrees and universities but about talent, technique and experience. And what Ive gathered so far is that the only good any kind of degree would do in my line of interest would be as a safety net in the form of another career path. So, being a good student for most of my education, Ive become very cynical concerning the time and energy that school takes away and for little benefit. That, combined with high tuition and inevitable debt, has turned me away from wanting to go to a four-year university. But of course, thats blasphemy to my fellow students and teachers. So Ive thought over and over, and Ive amended my plans in an effort to make the best choices for my future as well as to avoid harsh judgment from others.
This summer: Take classes at local theaters, take voice lessons, get a job
Senior Year: Part time job, do local plays, continue voice lessons and classes if possible
After high school: Keep working, do more plays, classes, and small performing jobs even if they are non-pay (experience is experience), take community college courses (that way I still have the option of going to a four-year college if I change my mind OR if at a certain age Im unhappy and barely making it by, Ill have the requirements to get into a two Nursing program to become a nurse). See what performing opportunities come my way.
So does this seem like a reasonable plan? I know it will be tough and Im in no way looking for a life of luxury, I just want to do what I love to do. Also, I know that plans dont rarely go the way the they were written, I just want to know if this seems as logical to others as it does to me. Thanks a lot.
Answer: hmm well I am not sure if this is correct but ar'nt there universities for performing, and if you have great grades im sure you would get in. I mean do what you want to do, if you have found something that you truly want to do then consider youself lucky (I am a freshman in college, I was somewhat like you last year and I of course had no idea what to do so im an engineering student (the saftey net you mentioned and the probability of me enjoying it)). I can hear what you are saying about debt, but if you are truly a teramendous student you can get scholarships (along wiht your financial aid) and make the damage minimul. If you are truly talented enough in performing for your plans then I would say do it. This is what I would do if I were you, take the AP tests and SATs and whatever else you need to take and this summer take the classes, voice lessons and get the job. and once school starts up again re-evaluate the situation. How did all those summer activities go. Is this something you can see yourself doing and are you cut out for it. If you can answer yes to those questions then keep on moving forward. You seem to be a smart person, I am sure whatever you decide to do you'll make the right choice.

Public school kids: Dos and Donts for transferring to public school from private school?
Warning: I know I sound stuck up in this, but I cant find another way to put it. I do realize that not all public school kids are violent. cliquey, and mean, Im friends with some people in public school, but I also know that there are some that definitely ARE.
Next year, for my freshman year of high school, I am switching schools from my fancy rich kid private school to the local public school, due to money issues. Its hard to go to a rich kid school if youre not a rich kid. But anyways, Ive always gone to private school, and I know its different at public school. One example comes to mind where a girl who came from public school, Casey, fell down and tripped during a soccer game. People came up to her and said things like, "Are you alright? Did you fall? Did you hurt your ankle?" She responded by saying "No shit sherlock."
You cant do this at private school, it brakes several unofficial rules. One is that you always ALWAYS have to be polite and overly nice in public (your friends dont count.) Another is that you cant cuss if youre not around your friends, especially if a teacher is nearby. If the coach had heard that she probably would have gotten detention. Another is that its a rule that if someone even barely gets shoved at all we have to make a small fuss, its polite. See? Its different in private school.
I dont want to get beat up or something. Dont say that wouldnt happen, I know my twins friends get into fights all the time. When my twin, Jess, thought my boyfriend was cheating on me she hilariously slammed his head into a locker a couple times and then walked away without telling him why. (He wasnt cheating).
Also, Im a bit of a nerd. I come to school, because its important, I mean you cant be happy in life if you dont have an education. If you dont have a good education and go to college you end up working at Wal-Mart. Im a straight A student, for the first time since lower school I havent gotten anything below a 90 on my report card for the whole year.OF course, Im not in any honors classes, but the only honors class I could take is math. Because of this, I figure people wont like me. Im also Christian. Thats a religion. Religion = having an opinion that people of other religions will disagree with. Its not like Im outspokenly religious or anything, but I dont know, the school Im going to sounds pretty vicious. I also like rock music and while I enjoy mainstream, I dont like most of it. This follows under the "opinion that others might disagree with" category. And finally, my sister is emo. Hate is contagious. If they see me wearing a band t-shirt (the only band t-shirt I have is black) and its for a rock band, and they see my sister is emo, they might assume that Im emo too and do the same stuff to me that they do to her. Im going to try and just go with the flow and not stand out, not until I settle into public school life at least. Plus, Jess said I can join her group until I find my own group of friends, so I wont be the kid that, as my best friend Sarah so eloquently put it, "sits alone at lunch while sandwiches are thrown at them." .Im not a very opinionated or argumentative person, and I pretty much let people do what I want so Im cool with emos, gays, bi, whatever. (unless its a lesbian who gets a crush on me..that would be awkward. I know it can happen, it happened to my sister. lol)
So, what can I do to fit in at public school and not embarass myself? At Jesss school, if youre hated youre damned, the whole school hates you. Ive heard lots of stories about this happening. Mansfield High is one of the better schools in the district from what Ive heard, and its better than Timberview ( a school filled with gangs, drugs, and violence. I know a student got shot there in a gang attack either last year or a few years ago. And my boyfriend is moving into the Timberview district. Hes gonna get MUGGED.)
So...dos and donts? As always, please be nice or be reported, and thank you!
By the way, though Im Christian and I go to private school, I dont go to a Christian private school, its a secular one, so I wont have to adjust to people following different religions. I mean, neither of my best friends are Christian. (One is Muslim, the other is agnostic.) By the way, Im going to miss my friends so much, Ive been friends with them for a long time...Im worried I wont remember how to make new friends?
@Hailey: I dont...understand...I didnt say anything about money, except that I was transferring from a rcih kid school because Im not rich. Im just nervous about going to public school when Ive heard SO many bad things about it.
Answer: 1.Don't act stuck up or snobby because you went to a nicer school, if you do the kids will label you as the new jerk
2.Continue to get good grades, in my experience ( 4 schools all public ) kids wont call you a nerd if you get A's and B's
3. And be yourself
have fun

How bad will this hurt my chances?
Ok so for some reason this quarter in honors pre-calc Ive been doing terrible. I understand all the material and know what I am doing but then come test time, I do stupid little mistakes which result in getting an average of 3-4 points off and the tests are worth 25 points so therefore on my last two tests I have gotten an 87% and an 84% with the last test I took which I predict I will get an 85-92% on and so I am completely freaking out. Ive done the math and I need at least a 90 on this last test and 100 on the next one so I can barely get an A minus. Im so disappointed Ive been crying and worrying myself sick as Ive never gotten a B. I understand its no big deal but then I need to get an A on the final exam in order to get an A for the year and if I dont, then my A first semester doesnt even matter. Ive never gotten a B before and Im wondering what if I get a B for the year? How will it affect my chances at these schools:
Reaches:
Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Vassar, NYU
and my matches:
BC, BU, Fordham, American, Northeastern, Syracuse, Rochester
considering the following:
-4.8 weighted gpa [4.0 uw]
-28/29 ACT [hopefully will get higher next time]
-ranked in the top 10 in my class
-All honors/AP [8 APs total when I graduate]
-weak outside ECs however since my parents worked weird shifts/lots of overtime so I had to take take care of my brother and the house, but what ECs I do have I hold leadership positions in but are pretty generic- Spanish club, orchestra, freshman mentor, office/teacher aide but I will hopefully be selected as a zoo volunteer this summer/find a job somewhere and will being volunteering/researching at my local historical society.
-I think Ill have a good essay
-great recommendations
-will be a first generation college student and trilingual
I understand that people get into HYPS and other top schools who have received Bs, but Im worried because of my ACT/ECs in combination with the possible B for the year. Sorry for all the info. thrown at you. I appreciate your time if youre read this far! So, should I just forget about my reaches?
By HYPS I meant Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford and those schools. Sorry.
Answer: You sound like I did a few months ago when I was doing poorly in my math class. haha
Here is what I learned after I spoke to BU. They said that they don't really care if you get one bad grade. They care about your over all GPA, and honestly this is true for most schools besides Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, HYPS (I like that haha) because they are ivy league schools.
You are going to get into vassar, NYU, BC, BU, Fordham, American, Northeastern, Syracuse, Rochester
i have a friend who graduated with a 3.4 weighted gpa and a sat score of 1920 who got into NYU. American, BU, Syracuse are not as competitive as NYU, so I think you are doing great. Plus, your EC's are EXCELLENT.
Good luck :)

I am lying all the time, sneaking around, and depressed. I dont even know myself anymore, help please!?
Dont judge too harsh...I just need help. It started a few years ago but has gotten worse over time. Heres the latest. I know I am a pathological liar. I dont know why and I lie about the dumbest things. I was going through something with my dad and exaggerated it as so he abused me. I told my best friend that and she told the counselor, who then called my mom. My mom came to school and said that it was a lie. I also told this abuse thing to my band teacher, so I had to tell him the truth too. My dad has been angry at me since, and I know I hurt him really bad. I then had sex for the first time, and felt really bad because I told myself I was going to wait, but I ended giving it up to a guy I never want to see again. I told my mentor because I knew it was wrong. (My familys very old fashioned and Christain). My mentor then told my mom who said that she will not tell my dad because my dad would kill the guy, because I was hurt. Then the beginning of this semester, we had a male student teacher in the music department. We became really good friends and he helped me with my music and we would talk a lot. I got a phone for Christmas and we started texting. I started having feelings for him. And he made it clear to me that he did too. One day after work, he picked me up (when i told my parents i was going to a basketball game) and we hung out, and held hands, but didnt kiss because i was dating someone. I broke up with him like 2 days later for him. So one day, I invited him over, and I told my mom that he was a friend from the college and he student teaches...but i didnt tell her where he student taught at. He came over, and before he left he kissed me, and my mom saw. She later found out that he was the student teacher for my school and said that the relationship needed to end, and she grounded me from my phone for a month. Me and him "ended it." We kept our relationship secret...because I am 17 and hes 22. We talked on the phone when i finally got it back and texted all the time. We denied the relationship so he wouldnt get fired. Well...my mom found out again and flipped shit. She called the school, and they fired him and he has to go to a different college. I am being blamed for him getting fired and I am being harassed at school. I told him that I didnt want to come in between him and his career...but it did. Everyone thinks that I lied about the relationship to get him fired...which is not true. I lied to everyone about it, and no one believes me know because of the lying I did before. I am going through like really bad depression and I stole my friends iPod touch, and my mom grounded me from electronics and she saw the iPod and asked me where I got it...which i said my friend let me borrow it. she said if she saw it again, she would smash it...well she saw it again, and now the iPod is in about 15 pieces in a bag. My mom is making me buy "my friend who let me borrow it" a new one, and she gave my ipod to my sister. I got accepted to a college I wanted to go to about 3 hours away but my mom said I have to stay local. I just dont know what to do. I need help but I cant even talk to my parents, because they dont believe anything I say. Sorry its so long, but someone please help me.
I have tried to stop lying and it last for a little bit, but then I start doing it...I dont know how to stop all together. I have hurt tons of people. ugh
Answer: honestly, you should seek counseling. this seems like a real problem that is making your life very problematic. the good thing is, you recognize that you have a problem, now you just need to take step two. good luck...

COLLEGE STUDENTS: How do you petition a college class?
Im a high school student and I would like to take a course at the local community college this summer. (for my VPA credits) However, the class is currently full so I cant sign up for it.
Apparently you can petition the class to get in even though its full. So, from what Ive heard, you attend the class on the first day and then you ask the professor if you can get in. (and youre supposed to have a special form or something to sign) Exactly how does this petitioning work out? Do I just go up to the professor after the class and ask if its possible to get in? (I think this is rather awkward..) And, do I come to class with only the basic materials? Do I need the textbook on the first day? (I dont want to buy the textbook if I cant get into the class)
Some people also said you could email the professor ahead of time to show him you really want to take the class. What do you recommend I when I ask him for permission? Also, what do you recommend I mention in my email?
Any advice/info about this at all will help me out a lot. Thank you~
Answer: I've been there several times, and used to work at a University Registrar's Office; here is my advice:
1. Contact the professor before the first day of class. That first day he/she will likely have several students clamoring for attention and a spot in the class, and it will be hard to 'win' the spot. You will seem responsible and proactive if you email, or even visit the professor before hand.
2. Send an email telling him a little about you (like 1-2 sentences, I'm in high school, interested in this class, blah blah blah) and explain why you need this class in particular. Is it needed for your hs/college credit? Is it the only class that fits your schedule? Do you like what you've heard about the professor? Be honest.
3. He will probably respond with one of a few answers, either telling you no, too many students, class is full, reccommending you take the class with another prof, saying to wait until the first day or attend class for a week first, or saying yes and to bring the form for him to sign.
4. Go to the registrars office and ask them for the 'add class' permission form for a full class. They may have to check the fire limits too- some classrooms are small and can legally only have a certain amount of students, thus the class limits. Once you have the prof sign the form, bring it back to the registrar to add the class.
If all else fails and you simply cannot get into the class, try taking an alternative class and registering for this one as early as you can next semester or next year.
Hope this helps!

Will the execution-style murder of three young students in Newark, N.J., finally turn the tide in the immigration-enforcement debate? Will we at last abandon the deadly, chaotic, lawless sanctuary-nation experiment and restore America’s lost status as a sovereign nation under the rule of law?
The death of six innocent men and women and the injury of more than 1,000 at the hands of several illegal alien 1993 World Trade Center bombers wasn’t enough to convince politicians in New York and across this country to end illegal-alien sanctuary policies.
The death of nearly 3,000 innocent men, women, and children at the hands of the 9/11 jihadists who exploited our lax entrance and visa-enforcement policies in 2001 wasn’t enough.
The death of ten innocent men and women in the Washington, D.C., area at the hands of an illegal-alien sniper and his bloodthirsty mentor in 2002 wasn’t enough.
But now we are in the heat of a presidential-election cycle. The open-borders opportunists in immigration-enforcement clothing are professing to see the light. With illegal-alien murder suspect Jose Carranza and his alleged MS-13 gang-banging boy helpers who are being sought in the brutal Newark murder case dominating the news on the eastern seaboard, politicians can’t find a camera fast enough to condemn the very sanctuary policies they promoted and tolerated for decades — sanctuary policies I’ve highlighted for years in this column.
Amnesty-first GOP presidential candidate John McCain is now singing the enforcement-first tune. And GOP presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani vowed Tuesday to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S.
He’s touting a “tamper-proof ID card” that includes fingerprints for everyone entering the country and a central database to track when they leave.
What Rudy-come-lately fails to comprehend is that there are already multiple alien tracking databases mandated by federal law that have yet to be fully implemented, integrated and used. The reason they don’t work is because open-borders interests have sabotaged them by restricting funding for them, objecting to them on civil liberties grounds, and pushing local and state governments to forbid public employees from checking them to verify citizenship status. Ring a bell, Rudy?
Giuliani’s newfound border security zeal is intended to blunt criticism by GOP rival Mitt Romney of Giuliani’s pro-sanctuary record as NYC mayor. Giuliani has issued Clintonian denials that he supported sanctuary. But the record is clear. New York City’s sanctuary policy was created in 1989 by Democrat Mayor Ed Koch and upheld by every mayor succeeding him. When Congress enacted immigration reform laws that forbade local governments from barring employees from cooperating with the INS, Giuliani filed suit against the feds in 1997. He was rebuffed by two lower courts, which ruled that the sanctuary order amounted to special treatment for illegal aliens and was nothing more than an unlawful effort to flaunt federal enforcement efforts against illegal aliens. In January 2000, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal, but Giuliani vowed to ignore the law.
To this day, the city’s policy of safe harbors for illegal immigrants stands. Giuliani successor Michael Bloomberg defiantly reiterated the official sanctuary posture of NYC this week: “Let ‘em come.” Could he be more callous, cavalier and out of touch in a post-9/11 world?
From New York to Newark to Seattle to Portland to San Francisco to Los Angeles to San Diego to Houston to Miami, lawmakers have taken this go-with-the-flow attitude toward illegal alien border-crossers and visa overstayers and deportation fugitives. “Let ‘em come.”
But in the wake of the Newark murders and the illumination of illegal alien gang crime penetrating the country, a new rallying cry came from the lips of Newark Mayor Cory Booker: “Get this evil out of my city.” That won’t happen without a demonstrated commitment to cooperate with the feds to enforce immigration laws and deport violent and dangerous criminal aliens first.
A few weeks ago, I launched deportthemnow.com. Nearly 8,000 volunteers have signed up to make their voices heard. Our top priorities will be to push for the adoption of a program known as 287(g) to identify criminal illegal aliens in as many cities as possible; to repeal “don’t ask-don’t tell” sanctuary laws; and to support lawmakers like Newark City Councilman Ron C. Rice, who is pushing a resolution to coordinate efforts between law enforcement when an illegal immigrant is charged with a felony, and New Jersey Assemblyman Richard Merkt (R., Morris), who proposed prohibiting jail officials from releasing illegal immigrants and requiring them to be remanded to federal authorities.
It’s time for ordinary Americans to come out of the shadows and remind Washington every day in words and actions that we are a sovereign nation, not a sanctuary nation.
No more promises. No need to wait for Election ‘08. Just do it.
