In a dimly lit backstreet in Gilfach, away from the public glare,
Constable John Flatbottom was writing his notebook with care.
It told of burglars thwarted, of muggers who just got away,
Of care and kindness for victims, and that had taken all day.
This work of official fiction was almost all complete
When out of the pub came a melee of fists and bottles and feet.
Flatbottom knew work when he saw it and quickly drove his car
Down a deserted alley, to the back of a four-ale bar.
Now Frank had just finished drinking and was going home to his wife.
Just a couple of drinks in friendship, to take the raw edge off his life.
As soon as he turned the corner, the police car was right on his tail,
John followed and then pulled him over. He knew he couldnt fail.
“Blow in this bag if you please sir” he said in official tone.
Hed called him Sir, but it sounded like Cur to Frank stood all alone.
Frank was not a well worker, he struggled to get through each day.
After puffing, wheezing and coughing, “I cant” was all he could say.
Flatbottom drove Frank to the station, for charging there to take place.
The Sergeant was delighted, and it showed all over his face.
For the Sergeant the regulations were orders carved in stone,
But still he omitted to mention a blood-test or a phone.
He followed the edits of New Labour, to clear the roads of all cars.
His hate of the private motorist was a hate that knew no bars.
His aim, like that of the Government, and about this he oft made fusses,
Was not to save the environment, but to fill private companies buses.
Frank turned up at the Courthouse feeling frightened and low.
He met the Duty Solicitor and told his tale of woe.
The lawyer listened quietly, but then he paid no heed,
Though gaps in police procedure were easily perceived.
He nodded sagely through the tale, considering Franks need,
Then to expedite matters, advised that Frank should guilty plead.
The words of the Home Secretary to the Magistrates had been passed,
The Law must be enforced, and criminals dealt with fast.
And if they felt some sympathy, which from them evoked some sighs,
They should follow his example, and turn them two blind eyes.
So Frank was dealt with summarily, stitched up, and fined and banned,
And also sternly cautioned that next time he would be canned.
Flatbottom heard the news with joy. The Sergeant too was pleased.
They both went round to the club next door, and each a tankard seized.
They filled them up and quaffed their ale, to drink to Franks conviction.
They drank again each other health, then drank without restriction.
In comradeship they enjoyed their drinks, then drove home to their wives,
Safe in the knowledge that no police car would come to blight their lives.
Answer: Good job on the rhyming couplets and the way the story flowed along smoothly. I think it's a very 'current' poem and in line with the times. It really makes sense and you should write some more!

Answer: I think this is delicious, especially the gibes at New Labour. The rough metre fits the satire well about nine-tenths of the time; here and there it stumbles, but that does not keep the poem from being an engaging sally. I would personally not be disposed to call this poem a monologue, but Cicero closed the book on questions of personal taste.
