I applied to many selective colleges, but was I being unrealistic?

Im currently a high school senior, and Ive already been accepted to UC Irvines Campuswide Honors Program and selected as a Regents Scholar. But all my other college decisions are coming out within the next 2-3 weeks, so naturally Im really scared about how they will turn out. I honestly have no clue since top school admissions are so random these days, but Id appreciate it if someone could briefly look over my stats and let me know what to expect (i.e. if you think Ill be rejected from all of them, let me know now). School List: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Columbia, Penn, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, Boston College Intended Major: Linguistics for now; considering neuroscience/neurobiology and engineering as other possibilities Unweighted GPA (4.0 scale): 3.8 SAT I: 2350 (760 Reading, 800 Math, 790 Writing) SAT II: 750 English Literature, 790 Math Level II, 800 French, 800 Chinese with Listening, 790 Spanish, 670 Physics (ugh) AP: 7 APs; all 5s and 4s. Planning to take either 5 or 6 more of them this year (making the total 12-13). Curriculum: Most demanding possible. Academic Honors: AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semifinalist Extenuating Circumstances: Attended 3 different high schools throughout high school career; away from immediate family for prolonged periods of time Language Skills: Certifiably fluent in Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish, and German (as evidenced by the SAT II scores above and other awards) Extracurriculars: Foreign language learning, tutoring, translation and proofreading (9-12), piano (9-12), church youth group (9-12), writing/journalism (10-12), guitar (10-12) Awards: Internationally recognized language proficiency certificates in French, Chinese, Spanish, and German, placing at native or near-native level fluency in French, Chinese, and Spanish, and at a high level in German; National German Exam Gold Certificate (96th percentile nationally); AP Spanish Language Award of Excellence; Scholastic Writing Silver Key; published poem in national anthology; essay selected as finalist in international competition with 50,000+ entries annually; AMC 12A school winner; school spelling bee champion; ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Diploma; Michigan Music Teachers Association Level X Piano Distinction; performed at an internationally recognized arts venue as part of a concert for talented youth Volunteer Work: Language proofreader/tutor; church piano volunteer Leadership: Editor-in-chief of school newspaper and literary journal; co-president of writing club My intention is not to brag here, because given the high quality of applicants Ill be competing with at these schools, I feel that my being worried is not unwarranted. I am especially concerned about my Physics subject test score, though I hope my five other good scores will help to make up for it. Ive literally done my best for these past four years, but if my best wasnt good enough just say so - I wont be angry at you for it. Id much rather have you give an honest opinion right now so that I know what to expect. Thanks!
Answer: There's no reason not to apply for top colleges, as long as you can afford it. You've got some good credentials. Don't limit yourself, and good luck with your acceptance letters!

Would I be an appropriate Candidate for the IB?

Hi I live in the UK. And am approaching that time of thinking what I would like to do for sixth form, as I have not yet got any firm Ideas I just wanted to ask what people thought of the IB? And whether It would be suited to me? The thing is I feel that with A-Levels and studying only 4 subjects I would get quite bored to be honest! With my ten GCSEs I am studying now I still manage to get bored in History (which is a fascinating Subject but boring teacher) and only have it for two hours. Also I am not sure I could find 4 out of my 10 current subjects that stand out from the rest. If I chose to do IB my subject combination would be HL Maths, Physics and Chemistry SL English, German/French and probably Geography but as said not decisions there my retreat and choose History. On top of My Curriculum I study for LAMDA exams (Grade 5 at mo. will do another different Lamda Grade 5 Exam and ^ verse and Prose before I have to choose) I have got both my Bronze and Silver ( Silver being the GCSE Equivalent Arts Awards and am contemplating completing Gold worth 35 UCAS Points but it is extremely hard and I am not sure I can. I am also part of the Youth Theatre at School for the next to terms. With regards to other interests I have just completed my Bronze DofE Award and will probably have done my silver too by the time comes. Last year in Year 9 I sat an ICT Short Course and got a grad B - Which considering I spent the year sat under the table in ICT was not bad and I sat an FCSE in both French and German achieving Distinction in both but I have carried both these subjects through to GCSE. On top of all this I compete competitively at Swimming, and I receive Lifesaving Lessons for which I am working towards Award of Merit, got my Bronze Medallion with Life Support last term. At the age of Sixteen I plan on becoming a qualified lifeguard as well. In the mean time I may take the Judge 1 test out of interest. So as you can see I am a person who likes to be kept busy, challenged and pretty broad- my biggest worry is having to study english. Many people have said IB takes a lot of time but if I did move a lot of these other commitments may not actually carry on- for example Youth theatre, tech Crew and LAMDA (Arts Award I have pretty much given up on I am far too young!) So OK my Life may become more Primitive but its the sacrifice I would make! I also have quite a bit of staying power to manage all this along with Revision and Socializing and other necessities in my life. PS! No silly answers Please
Answer: No.

Answer: There's no sure way to know. Getting into harvard isn't easy. Sometimes, people who'd graduated number 1 in their class can't get in. Harvard, just like any college looks for diversity in their students. Have you watched the movie 21? In it, they say that to get into Harvard, you have to 'dazzle' them. Your profile is good, that much is certain. But does it dazzle? that's where I'm not sure. There are hundreds other applicants who have excellent profiles like yours. You could try to get in, but remember, excellent grades sometimes don't mean as much as other things. Good luck 'dazzling'!

What is a good area of the Army for me?

Im planning to submit an ROTC application in November after I take my last set of SATs. Im a high performing student, here are my stats: GPA- 3.72 unweighted Classes- 1 AP sophomore year, 4 junior year, 4 senior year, 9 total. Maximum of 2 classes a year that were either non-AP or non-Honors. Top 10% of my class. SATs: 800 reading, 660 writing, 620 math, 2080 overall. Most likely will go up after I take the test again. Activities: Play for the school soccer and tennis teams, won Unsung Hero for our soccer team (we won districts that year, went to state-semis). Was captain of the JV team. Also in Ski Club and Outdoor Club. James Otis Scholar 2009. National Honor Society. AP Scholar With Distinction. Physical condition- Excellent leg strength, I run over 4 miles a day. Upper body is a different story- my arms arent scrawny, but they definitely arent built either. Im working hard to correct that. The closest I come to a "physical impairment" is a slightly low blood-iron level, but its something that wouldnt even come up in a test because I take a vitamin supplement that completely corrects it. No other physical problems. Never been arrested, never been charged with a crime of any kind, no in school disciplinary action beyond an occasional detention. I can guarantee 100% that my drug test will come back completely negative; I can honestly say Ive never done drugs. Family background is also completely clean. All that is some background info, if you see a potential problem please tell me. Now, for the main question. Im wondering what area of the Army I should pursue. I have a general idea, but Id like to hear from other people, because it may spark some ideas, or point out things I may have missed. My intended college major(s) are a double major in Political Science and Foreign Relations. Psychology is also a possibility, but I definitely want to get a degree in Political Science, at the least. Im extremely interested in analyzing things, figuring out why people/nations act the way they do, and I love to read up on current events. Im good under pressure, and work my best when Im stressed. I love traveling, and am a bit of an adrenaline junkie. What Id really love to do is something where I can make a impact. Analyzing is what Im best at. My favorite subjects in school are the social sciences, Government, History, Economics, etc. Anyways, Id love to hear from people whove actually served (God bless!), since they have experience, but any ideas are welcome. Again, thank you!
Answer: If you go to college now, pick up a useful foreign language (Middle Eastern or Asian), and learn ArcGIS (it's offered at a lot of schools now, and it's the standard GIS software in the military now as well.) Political science is a good choice of major for the Army. Stay in shape, and you'll be fine by the time you graduate. If you want to be an officer, you can do ROTC in college, or wait until graduate and apply for OCS. You won't have as much say in your branch, but you'll adjust and excel pretty much anywhere, if you put those brains to good use. If you decide to enlist before you have a degree, look into military intelligence (35 series), psyops (37F), and civil affairs (38B.) Good luck. Thanks for considering serving your country!

My chances at getting in Georgia Tech?

Georgia Tech is the top college on my list because I would like to pursue an education in engineering. Here is a list of important things I have achieved throughout my high school years. Un-weighted GPA: 3.875 AP classes: AP Macroeconomics AP US History AP Political Systems AP calculus AB AP Physics C If my classes have not been AP, they have been at an Honors level. Extracurricular activities: Beta Club (Sophomore Year) Vision Crew (Responsible for setting up other volunteer clubs with volunteer activities – (Junior year) Science National Honors Society (Senior Year) I have participated in many school volunteer activities. (Working at a soup kitchen, cleaning up the school campus, donating blood to Red Cross, working at a store that supports battered women shelters) My freshmen year I won Freshman Student of the Semester both fall and spring semester. My junior year I won the Spanish Student of Distinction Award. (For doing so well in Spanish IV class) My class rank is 70/786. (Puts me in top 8.9%) I play in tennis tournaments outside of school. I live in Georgia. My Father attended GT and my brother currently attends GT. I am a white male. My Main concern is my SAT scores: Critical Reading 570 Math 610 Writing 530 So please tell me straight up what you think my chance of getting into Georgia Tech is.
Answer: I would say you are a shoe in. Five years ago, I had a similar number of AP classes, less extracurriculars, and better SAT scores (720 math, 710 verbal), and not only did I get in, I was accepted in November along with notification that I was a semi-finalist for the President's Scholarship (I didn't get it :( ). If you want to be more competitive for the President's Scholarship, you might try to improve your SAT, but I highly doubt you will not be admitted because of them. They look at the whole package. Your volunteer work especially would give you a leg up over me. For some reason, scholarships like that. I think I also botched the interview.... You cannot go wrong with an engineering degree from GT. Just keep your GPA up so that you can keep HOPE (IMO, there is no excuse to lose this) and remember to have fun along the way. College is about more than academics. You have plenty of time to figure out if you want to do engineering and then go do that for 50 years. The ratio really does suck (remember, you would have to deal with it for 4+ years; that did not completely occur to me until much later). Your brother would probably be a great resource for adjusting to college life.

Am I Penn/Georgetown/Brown capable? (International, dont know the standards)?

Hey there - Im an international tenth grader with my heart set on going to university in the US. I just wanted to know if someone could give me a rough idea if Im in the mix to get into a Tier 1 school - right now Im in love with Georgetown & Penn, and Ive also toured schools like Brown which I really like. So heres where Im at regarding school right now (we dont use the GPA system so its a lot harder to work out where I stand): - 1st in English & Maths; taking Extension Maths and Extension English next year (the first year you can); double Extension English in Senior Year. - Top 10% in every other subject (our school is 9th in the state and works beyond the curriculum; so although I score around 85-90% in our internal tests, by the state standards thats definitely higher). Beyond academia, I have: - - Competed at State Model UN finals, - Member of Senior Jazz Band, Senior Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, & Guitar Ensemble. - Play in varsity soccer & touch football, as well as community soccer team. - Volunteer lifeguard - Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards; Gold to be completed next year (the Award involves components of volunteering, a skill, a sport, and a 3-4 day hike). - Recently traveled alone for the first time to the US at an Ivy League summer school. - Im a Junior Prefect, with a strong likelihood of being a Senior Prefect and possibly House Captain, and was part of the Peer Support program. - Consistently achieve Distinctions & High Distinctions in international academic competitions (the two highest awards). - Selected to next year attend a young leaders conference in NY & DC, run by the UN. - In my spare time, Ive produced two music videos for signed artists at EMI Records (one of the Big Four). Using these skills & contacts Im also planning a large-scale charity concert (with prominent artists) for next year. Although Im not first overall in my grade, Im confident that Im at least in the top 10%; and at the end of my senior year, my teachers predict Ill (at least) finish in the top 5% of the state. Im taking the SATs next year. I also write a mean essay :P I know that no one can say definitively whether Ill get into one of these level of schools or not, but for me, not using the GPA system nor having yet sat my SATs, its just finding out if Im in a shot or its not really worth it. Im not going to be valedictorian, but Im hoping my outside-the-classroom interests will make up for this. Im also an international student able to pay the full fees, which Ive been told helps significantly. Any answers would be amazingly appreciated :) Kudos! If I were to estimate a GPA (I have absolutely no idea what it really is), Id say it be between 3.6 - 3.8 ish, probably higher by the end of next year. I also completed work experience at a prominent independent record label, receiving all "As" for it.
Answer: You appear to be a student who can get into some top schools. If you like Georgetown which is a Jesuit university, also consider applying to Boston College and Holy Cross (30 miles west of BC), both of which are also run by the Jesuits. Boston College and College of the Holy Cross share a number of similarities. Both are competitive schools, ranked among the best Northeastern colleges by the Princeton Review. Both have beautiful campuses; acres of manicured green grass and gothic architecture. And, like Georgetown, both have an esteemed Catholic background, one that is particularly attractive to students seeking a liberal arts education informed by Jesuit tradition. HC is 2800 students and small classes. BC is 9000 students. Both are Division 1 for sports like Georgetown.
