How can it be (see below)...?
...that two people, both claiming to be "filled with the Holy Spirit", can come to two completely opposite and mutually exclusive interpretations of Scripture?
What criteria do you use to determine which person is REALLY filled with the Holy Spirit, and which person is lying, or delusional, or simply mistaken as to the source of his inspiration?
And how do you make sure that your OWN judgment about these two conflicting interpretations isnt similarly tainted? If one person could so easily be mistaken or deluded about having the Holy Spirit in him, and still be so certain that he really DOES have it, couldnt YOU be mistaken, also? By what objective criteria do you judge?
Answer: That's a good point, and the exact reason people should keep their religious judgements to themselves. There is no way to know who is right, so to claim you're absolutely correct so much that you would condemn others, is extremely conceited.

Why does the Holy Spirit™ inspire conflicting interpretations in different individual Christians?

"got an example?..."
Bwahahahaha...dude, dont make me choke on my carrot.
Answer: Good question. My evangelical friends tell me they get their scriptural interpretations from the Holy Spirit, but if that is a reliable method of interpretation, they should all get the same answer.
The fact that we have over 30,000 denominations suggests that the private inspiration route is not working.
The Holy Spirit is God, and God answers prayer, but his answers are often unexpected, and often misinterpreted. He inspires, but he doesn't expect us to take dictation.
By the way, several answerers have used the pronoun "it" for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not impersonal.
The reliable way to arrive at good biblical interpretations is to "Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim 2:15).
Scripture study depends on context, which means any correct interpretation must examine how contemporary writers understood the passage. The best authorities for interpreting biblical texts are the Fathers of the Church, disciples of the Apostles who lived in the second and third centuries.

How would I explain both sides of this interpretation?
This is the interpretation:
After a decade of intense conflict, exacerbated by strong differences of opinion over maintaining our neutrality with regard to the Anglo-French wars, Jefferson, Madison and their supporters prevailed and hoped to put an end to both "factions" and Hamiltons policies. Ironically, Madison and his supporters not only found it necessary to go to war in 1812 to defend our neutral rights, in the aftermath of that war they abandoned their previous scruples about strengthening the power of the central government and embraced many of the measures they had so strongly opposed in 1790 and 1791, including a protective tariff and a Second Bank of the United States.
What would I have to talk about, Im not asking you to fully give me the answer, but could you guide me the right way. i.e. basic outline, topics, etc.
Answer: We had the war of 1776 for our independence The war we declared in 1812 was to stop the Brits from boarding our ships on the high seas,,,and they did ....Texas tried to enter the union and was refused as we were a slave state only after the brits tried to ally with us did they let us in
We had our civil war and the brits were supplying the south They also invaded Mexico along with the French and Spanish and were told it was an act of war the brits and Spain left as told
My point is we had part of their empire north of us they were powerful at the time we had for a time try too stay out of war with them until we grow to the point that was no longer needed
Of course the Brit did not want to let go of any part of their empire

Why is that we Christians are so often prone to assuming (when science & the Bible appear to conflict) that...?
......our use of SCIENCE is flawed instead of assuming that our interpretation of the Bible is flawed?
We see this regularly on R&S. EXAMPLE: Even though the Bible says absolutely nothing about the details of the process(es) God used in creating the universe [e.g. "Let there be light" is in a context of claiming that God did the creating but theres very little HOW], plenty of Christians with little or no familiarity with astrophysics [and no Biblical Hebrew exegesis background, for that matter] nevertheless overrule all scientists by stating "THE BIG BANG THEORY IS ABSURD!" Many declare science in error about the Big Bang [Doesnt that seem a bit arrogant?] and those people show little humility to leave open the possibility that their interpretation of relevant Biblical texts might be flawed. WHY IS THAT?
==================================================================
OPTIONAL RELATED QUESTIONS:
History provides countless examples where many Christians erred in their understanding of both science AND the Bible itself. But the arrogance continues. Yes, the Bible claims that it is inerrant. But the Bible never claims that our INTERPRETATIONS of the Bible are inerrant. SO WHAT IS THE BASIS FOR THIS COMMON BELIEF THAT IF THERE IS CONFLICT BETWEEN OUR INTERPRETATION OF SCIENCE AND OUR INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE, IT IS THE SCIENTIFIC SIDE THAT IS FLAWED?
[Or do you think the days of Christians being wrong when claiming that the Bible conclusively ruled some scientific claim invalid are forever behind us? Has God declared Christian inerrant on all matters of science? e.g. Many Christians have declared that the Bible soundly condemns the theory of evolution as fundamentally in error and even that "Satan is the author of the theory of evolution."]
Answer: The bible is perfect and is not wrong in translation. God promised to preserve his word for ever. that every generation would have it. Psalms 12:6: The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Psalms 12:7: Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
I don't believe science conflict with the Bible at al they go together. No one can prove Beyond a shadow of a doubt that evolution is correct or that God created the world either. But there is a lot of evidence that there is a God. Psalms 19:1: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. It takes faith to believe in God just as it takes faith to believe in evolution.

Other than the failure in Iraq, what makes Bush the worst president ever elected to the office?
Bush should be considered the worst president to date based upon his frequent use of signing statements. He has used over 130 signing statements containing over 750 challenges on legislation within his term and a half in the White House. By using a signing statement, he states that he has the power to set aside laws when they conflict his with interpretation of the Constitution. Or as an editorial in the New York Times stated when comparing him to other presidents:
"And none have used it so clearly to make the president the interpreter of a laws intent, instead of Congress, and the arbiter of constitutionality, instead of the courts."
What he is in fact doing is destroying the very system of check and balances that have made this government work. His actions are destroying the delicate balance designed by the Constitution to equalize power between three distinct areas of the United States government.
Should the president have the right to change our system of governement?
By the way, executive orders are differnet from signing statements.
An executive order is an edict issued by a member of the executive branch.
A signing statement is added to a piece a legislation passed by the US Congress to state that the executive branch need not comply with a law enacted by said legislature.
This isnt meant to be a partisan question.
Whether your a Democrat or a Republican or non-partisan as I am, whats at stake is the Constitution of the United States.

Is Giovanni really advocating violence in "Poem for Black Boys?" HELP!!?
Im writing an essay on Giovannis poem "Poem for Black Boys", and the analogy/criticism books that I read seem to have conflicting interpretations on her "advocacy" of violence. Some books say that she really WAS telling the black youths to go the violent way for change, and some say that it was sacarsm at the meaningless violence. Im so confused now.
What do you think? (Ill post the poem below)
POEM FOR BLACK BOYS by Nikki Giovanni.
(With special love to James)
Where are your heroes, my little Black ones
You are the Indian you so disdainfully shoot
Not the big bad sheriff on his faggoty white horse
You should play run-away-slave
Or Mau Mau
These are more in line with your history
Ask your mothers for a Rap Brown gun
Santa just may comply if you wish hard enough
Ask for CULLURD instead on Monopoly
DO NOT SIT DO NOT FOLLOW KING
GO DIRECTLY TO STREETS
This is a game you can win.
As you sit there with all your understanding eyes
You know the truth of
As you sit there with all your understanding eyes
You know the truth of what I’m saying
Play Back-to-Black
Grow a natural and practice vandalism
These are useful games (some say a skill even learned)
There is a new game I must tell you of
Its called Catch The Leader Lying
(and knowing your sense of the absurd you will enjoy this)
Also a company called revolution has just issued
a special kit for little boys
called Burn Baby
I’m told it has full instructions on how to siphon gas
and fill a bottle
Then our old friend Hide and Seek becomes valid
Because we have much to seek and ourselves to hide
from a lecherous dog
And this poem I give is worth much more
than any nickel bag
or ten cent toy
And you will understand all too soon
That you, my children of battle, are your heroes
You must invent your own games and teach us old ones
how to play.
Answer: I found an excellent analytical review of this poem - which I agree with - I do NOT think she is advocating violence, rather she is raising it to an eye level in order to be llooked at cleanly....
Analyzing Poem for Black Boys
By Lindsey Hume
In “Poem for Black Boys”, Nikki Giovanni presents black boys as stereotypical figures, indirectly illustrating her anger from an African-American’s perspective. This poem portrays the struggle of an African-American to be accepted into society and treated equally. By talking to “her little black ones”, Giovanni prepares the young boys for their future, telling them to be rebellious and infringe upon the laws, because this is what everyone expects from them. “Ask for CULLURD instead of Monopoly/ DO NOT SIT IN DO NOT FOLLOW KING/GO DIRECTLY TO STREETS/ this is a game you can win.” In these lines, Giovanni is illustrating how society automatically categorizes the African-American race to be uneducated, treating these people to be worthless. Giovanni says society assumes that they are just a bunch of troublemakers, undeserving of participating in normal daily activities. However in this line, Giovanni tells the boys that they can play another game other than Monopoly, one that they already know very well how to play. In this poem the author illustrates how society categorizes African-American boys as mischievous troublemakers, whom are only capable of doing awful things. Yet, the poet suggests to the boys to be strong, and have faith, for they will have to invent their own games to play, meaning they will need to find how to live happily despite what society thinks of them. She asks the boys that they will share their new way to live life happily with the older people, for they’ve never learned how to do so. Therefore in this poem, we find the struggle for blacks to be accepted into civilization.

what exactly does "separation of church & state" mean? i hear conflicting interpretations of it?
& i dont know the context that it was said in.
Answer: The issue of the separation of church and state is one that has prompted much debate. In spite of the rhetoric common to revisionist historians, our founding fathers did not seek to eradicate religion in America. Indeed, an overwhelming majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence counted themselves as men of faith. It may come as a surprise, then, for many to learn that nowhere in the Constitution do the words “separation of church and state” appear. It simply is not there. The idea of church/state separation came from a letter penned by Thomas Jefferson. Again, contrary to the nonsensical propaganda from the revisionists, Jefferson’s cause was to protect religious liberties from an intrusive government! In no way did Jefferson or any of the other framers of the U.S. Constitution seek to restrict Americans’ religious activities.
We live in a democracy rather than a theocracy—and for good reason. State-sanctioned churches become puppets of the government. Under such circumstances, the edicts of fallible man take precedence over the inspired teachings of Scripture. When the state heads the church, the integrity of the Gospel is all too easily compromised. Likewise, civil servants living on tax dollars are unfit for serving as pastors, for their loyalties are divided between the One who calls them and the other who feeds them. Such compromises do not belong in the pulpit. Let the government build roads and let Christ build His church.
Another bit of nonsense being force fed to the public is the notion that men and women of faith have no business in politics. But it is hardly a secret that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were men of deep, unwavering Christian faith. Their personal writings, public statements, church involvement, and the testimony of their families reveal their lifelong commitment to Christianity. They were hardly alone in their faith; again, the majority of our nation’s founders aligned themselves with Christianity.
A Christian should view the separation of church and state to be a good thing. Those who wish to combine them usually do so thinking that Christianity is the only religion that will be state-sanctioned. The opposite is true. Once the state aligns itself with religion, the floodgates will be opened for any and all religions to take their place in government.

In Chiromancy (Palm Reading), what is the difference between the left and right hands?
Your left and right hands have very different lines. Are they interpreted separately? Wouldnt they have two conflicting interpretations?
Answer: Hello 'The Bees Knees',
Haha... great question!
Actuallly, the answer depends very highly on which BRANCH of palm reading (palmistry) you're refering to.
For, in classic Indian palmistry for men the RIGHT. hand is considered as most important, and for women the LEFT hand.
However, the reverse is true for classic Chinese palmistry (LEFT hand for males, RIGHT hand for females).
So, this kind of 'proves' how the approach is related to the culture and/or philosophical background.
By the way, Western palm readers & hand analysts usually prefer to use BOTH hands for both men and women. Some prefer to use a 'mirror-like' approach for left-handed people (based on vague claims regarding how the brain of left handers works) - but the truth is that the brain of left handed people only show some minor changes compared with the brains of right handed people (so, the basics of the mirror-like approach for left handers is actually highly questionable).
I hope this info is usefull for you - the source below present more details on the facts, mysteries and myths regarding the hand differences between left handers & right handers!

A question regarding the conflict between Gnostic interpretation and modern Christian Bible interpretation?
In the Gospel of Nicodemus the purpose of Christs descent into hell is to raise the dead and arrest Satan, taking from Satan what was gained from the Tree of Knowledge ( this is recorded to being among the chief virtues of the Gnostics, forebearers to modern Christianity ) by the force of the Tree of the Cross ( the ultimate sacrific asked of Jesus by God Almighty ) thereby returning mans souls to obedience to God and gaining a passage for all to enter Heaven. This then creates the unavoidable circumstance that Knowledge is heresy, how is this then resolved in modern Christianity? For those that ascribe to the four Gospels James has a fairly close parallel to these conduits of passage that are similar enough to convey the same argument.
Answer: First, the so-called "Gospel of Nicodemus" is a 4th century writing from the Gnostics...a group outside of mainstream Christianity. There really isn't anything to be reconciled from a Christian point of view, because the writing is purely fictional. Do some points of Gnostic belief dovetail with Christian thought? Sure. Like most cult groups, they merely emphasized/embellished those things that fit their slant.
The Tree of Knowledge wasn't about obtaining intellectual acumen. Rather, it was the realization of good & evil. It was the realization that free will can be used in the capacity of rebellion and disobedience.
James is often misunderstood. Even Martin Luther at first thought the book ran counter to the rest of the the New Testament (he later changed his understanding of that). James wasn't warring against knowledge. Rather, he was saying that knowledge/faith is worthless in a Christian's life if it wasn't accompanied by deeds. That is, knowledge and actions are intertwined with a "living faith"...
Good question...I hope I'm not missing the full intent of what you asked...?

Are there are novels detailing the struggle between mainstream science and religion?
For an English assignment, I am to write an essay of at least five paragraphs in which I must talk about the reality of the issue (the conflict between popular interpretation of science) and religion (more specifically, Christianity) and compare and contrast that with how fictional literature depicts the issue. Ive got Inherit the Wind, but thats it. Any suggestions?
Answer: 'Contact' by Carl Sagan. Its was also made into a movie. It deals with this issue quite a bit in the sub-plot.

Answer: You could try this. It's all there but it might be a bit deep for you. However, you do use the term 'hominin' so it shows you to be above average for this group.

DOES WINSTON KAYANAN REALLY CARRY THE WORD OF GOD (PART 1 OF 2)?
It is very ironical for people to ignore our life history of biological existence in the way God created the world. The author Winston Kayanan from the Philippines presented a greenery solution of land rehabilitation of the 60% desertified soils worldwide by engendering large-scale organic matter cycling to obtain massive photosynthesis (the taking of CO2 as food material & production of O2 to repair the environment). This will dramatically rejuvenate earth against global warming & climate change towards O3 layer recovery, normal weather & climate, food abundance, fuel reserve deposits, among others. But instead, most governments continued to subscribe on UNEP’s carbon emission reduction by which they swore when it will only oppress people from livelihood & suppress economy from growth. It has no living spirit, i.e., without curing capabilities because it cannot breath to filter the air. It cannot catalyze, synthesize, ionize or even neutralize compounds. Others say that we can explore current warming (as free energy) for economic development & recovery when it can flame earth more fiercely than fire to destroy plants & forests, to cause heat stroke & other illnesses, to create epidemic and so on. And UNEP found protection in their lifeless invention from NGOs like 350.org, Oxfam, and many others. As it became a pitfall for everyone to bend down, it is the beginning, cause & effect of the greatest deception in the history of mankind that was rooted on false sciences and hence it is fraudulent & invalid. Since nothing came about on the author’s action to divert the attention of the world to another path (his technology with the same purpose as mentioned above), people have remained blind for they could not still see that, if the depleted O3 layer & melted glaciers are not repaired, the horrors of climate change will continue wreaking havoc & chaos.
For having acquired God’s revelation of the 4-beast vision in Daniel 7, the author continued his pursuit in the global campaign to save people & earth, given with confidence after abandoning his offered solution many times. As a consequence, people could not also perceive that the author had established a true religious knowledge with God as answer to our ailing environment. Dubbed as the 3rd interpretation in the world, he was able to decipher & translate more than 20 codes to reality in just 2 minutes on June 28, 2004 (within 5 days), overshadowing the empirical studies of the Catholic Church as the 1st interpreter (or even USA 1999 version as 2nd) unless, of course, it comes true or has happened. Critics in the yahoo Q & A entirely showed negative responses – generally stupidity came on in their minds and, for such reaction, God specifically mentioned them in Daniel 12:10.
The author further claims that it is very clear in the scriptures (Daniel 12:8) when it said, “These words are secret & sealed until the appointed time of the end,” which means it will be revealed at present times rather than the past. Since there are two existing versions: one, before Christ made by the Catholic Church (the period of King Antiochus) and the other, after Christ made by USA (war in Europe), then the meaning of the 4-beast was not revealed, i.e., untimely interpreted. The fact that the dream of Daniel was preserved & retained in the Bible thru thousands of years, the dream remains to be a mystery, i.e., still open for things to happen. No one was officially recorded or confirmed holder (as author &/or witness) to tell & account its meaning thru or beyond world experience and therefore, the event did not occur at present times (still considered to be a myth according to one replier in May 2009). Reading the two conflicting interpretations of the Church and USA, these are purely guesswork being fabricated, presented in concoctions of historical events. Another replier in the yahoo Q & A did his best to research & to answer the author but sorry, it is not the era of King Antiochus (despite voted as best answer) because, contrary to scriptures, the son of man (who is Jesus Christ) did not exist in that period – the puzzle in which the church could not conclusively explain. In other words, the author found the theological studies of the Catholic Church & USA (1999 version) likewise invalid, together with the scientific studies of UN (protecting Kyoto Protocol).
Answer: Well no, because gods aren't real, they're fictional.
