Subway Riders Master The Art of the Swipe; Fewer MetroCard Glitches Reported As Public and Transit System Adapt
By now, the motion is ingrained in the psyche of most New Yorkers, that quick, fluid flick of the arm and wrist that results in the cheerful beep and thunk signaling successful entry into the citys subway system. But like a pitcher who suddenly cannot find the plate, or a golfer who develops a slice, even the most experienced MetroCard swipers - New York City transit riders are reporting fewer problems using their MetroCards, many of whose glitches have been worked out in 10 years since their introduction; riders seem to have adjusted to using cards at turnstiles, where they have totally replaced tokens; New York City Transit is more attentive to cleaning turnstile heads and sending out troubleshooters to deal with broken machines; vandalism and theft still plague system, especially vending machines, but adjustments have been made to try and prevent fraud; photos, graph showing monthly service calls for turnstiles since Jan 2003 (L) - By MICHAEL LUO

Whos good with making up titles for short essays?
This is an essay for my English class, and I just suck at titles. If you read it and make a suggestion, Id really appreciate it. Thanks.
We need to bring bumper cars to the freeways. And no, this is not ridiculous; it is perhaps one of the most revolutionary thoughts of the modern world. Just imagine- the brightly colored bodies, adorable antennas, and joyful little blares of carnival horns. Not only that, but think of the air whooshing around you as you glance from left to right, sweeping over your surroundings, with the adrenaline coursing through your veins as you aim haphazardly at the middle aged fellow commuter two lanes over. The steady acceleration, the widening eyes of your victim as they unhappily look down at their coffee cup, and that oh-so-wonderful parting of their lips into the perfectly round, “No!” all contribute to that sweet victorious collision of inflated bumper against inflated bumper, and makes it all the better as you marvel at the ingenious transition of the average automobile to bumper car.
Yes, this wonderful plan is without flaw. Bumper car freeways will actually make vehicular accidents fun and something to strive for, instead of incidents worthy of only exasperated sighs and annoyed grumbles. That is, unless, you are among those who laugh uproariously at the very idea and proclaim it even worse than pressurized cheese.
However, that derisive ridicule is exactly what changes us- well, perhaps the theory behind it, not the needless destroying of self-esteems. When we have differing opinions, we exercise our natural ability to process and form ideas, thus sharing our unique insights with the world. While some may just look my proposal and unbecomingly snort at its craziness, another might see potential and take it a step further, adding and tweaking as necessary. This process becomes part of the fabled inevitable change we all must endure, because once you say what you think, that idea is no longer solely yours. It becomes part of the community and evolves into a much larger beast that is fed by the thoughts of the world.
As someone critiques us, we react to their opinions. Either we listen or ignore them, but we are still affected. The changes they try to inspire in us will always be part of the present, as they were part of the past and cannot be lost. We are unable to escape change.
Therefore, if I have but one chance to create a lasting impression upon this earth, I hope to voice a thought to revolutionize the world. I’ll even settle for just making someone stop and think about what I’ve said, as long as they acknowledge the idea of whatever my perspective was. Simply, if my opinion affects another, I have impacted change, just as much as change has impacted me.
After all, each time you tell someone what you think, you change the world. Every single word spoken becomes a sentence, a thought, an idea, an action- even the blaring of a small carnival horn translates into a life altering change.
Answer: You write very well. I enjoyed reading this essay very much! You get an A+!!
Anyway, how about "The Exponential Growth of an Idea"

Londoners in UK Who travel ?
I got this from facebook, please , Its getting ridiculous to Pay for Large amounts of expensive Cash just for traveling to a location or to and from Home isnt it ?
Please Spread The Word !
Common Interest - Beliefs & Causes
Description:
Its about time we Londoners made it clear to the train companies that we will no longer accept these above inflation price rises which pay for "improvements" that we never see. Complaining about it but accepting them will not change anything. We need to get as many people as possible to join this group in solidarity. The aim is to organise a protest day where everyone travels without a ticket. Dont think it cant be done - this happened in Sydney and was a success and we CAN do it here as well. Please let everyone know about this group.
Passengers face above-inflation price hikes for rail tickets from January, train companies have announced.
Unregulated fares, which companies are able to set themselves and cover tickets such as cheap day returns, will increase by between 3% and 7%.
The Association of Train Operating Companies said the money was needed to pay for ongoing service improvements.
Passenger groups have criticised the price increases and said rail users are already paying high fares.
Regulated fares, which include season tickets and saver tickets, are determined by the Department for Transport and account for 40% of tickets sold.
Most train companies will raise fares by 4.3% - 1% above inflation - when the new prices are introduced.
Merseyrail is to increase its regulated fares by 3.2%, while the Southeastern trains service between Kent and London will go up by 6.3% under the terms of its new franchise.
See the full list of train company fare rises
Island Line prices will go up by 5.3% while there will be no increase for Hull Trains and Heathrow Express passengers.
Unregulated fares, which account for 60% of tickets sold, will go up by varying amounts depending on train operator, with an average rise of 4.7%.
There are also big increases planned for the two dedicated airport services, the Gatwick Express and Heathrow Express, which will both see rises of 7.3%.
Passenger Focus, the independent rail consumer watchdog, said the new fares would hit those who were unable to book tickets in advance.
Off-putting prices
Anthony Smith, Passenger Focus chief executive, said: "Inflation-busting price hikes on top of already high fares will make for an unhappy passenger New Year.
"If you now want to travel longer-distance in the peak and dont know exactly when you are coming back you will pay very, very dearly.
"If passengers want flexibility or have no choice about when to travel they now face off-putting prices.
Improvements
Brian Cooke, chairman of passenger group London Travel Watch, said: "While we accept fares have to rise sometimes, any price rise above inflation is regrettable and will seem a lot to passengers in and around London who are increasingly faced with crowded platforms and trains."
Shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling said: "This is very unwelcome news for passengers and will only underline the fact that things are really not right on our railways."
Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Alistair Carmichael said: "Passengers will be exasperated by these fare increases, whilst levels of overcrowding on their trains continue to get worse."
Atoc director general George Muir said: "While no-one likes to pay more for their travel, we need the revenue to pay for the ongoing improvements to the railways that passengers expect - and overall satisfaction levels are now at an all time high of 80%.
"Train operators will continue to raise their game, delivering further improvements to the railway and enhancing the travel experience of passengers."
COMMUTER train fares will rocket by up to 11 per cent next year despite an eleventh hour plea by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon to limit the rises.
Turning a deaf ear to the Cabinet ministers demand for restraint, rail operators announced that increases far outstripping inflation will come into effect on 2 January.
Rail chiefs confirmed commuters in the South-East will bear the brunt of rises — up an average of eight per cent for peak time and six per cent off peak.
The worst-hit passengers will be on Southeastern, which will be allowed to put up fares by an average of eight per cent to fund commuter trains on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
The increases mean hundreds of pounds will be added to some annual tickets sparking fears that passengers could be priced off the railways.
Every year train companies are allowed to increase regulated commuter fares by the Retail Price Index based on the July figure — which was 5.3 per cent — plus one per cent. Regulated fares include season tickets. The exception is Southeastern, which serves Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria.

Around the world, atheists hit road to knock down God
by Prashant Rao Prashant Rao – Mon Jan 19, 1:07 am ET AFP/File – An artists impression of a London bus with the slogan Theres probably no God. Stop worrying …
LONDON (AFP) – An atheist drive to persuade people that God doesnt exist is catching on in a surprising fashion -- on the sides of buses in a growing number of countries around the world.
With the concise message "Theres probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life," the campaign took to the road in Britain this month, while similar drives are underway or planned in Spain, Italy, Canada and Australia.
The British campaign was originally floated by comedy writer Ariane Sherine in a newspaper column in June, and is hoping to reach the majority of the countrys population in some fashion or another over the next three weeks.
"We could never have imagined it would have gotten this big, and we would have raised quite this amount of cash," campaign co-founder Jon Worth, a political blogger and website designer, told AFP.
"Its astounding."
Sherine wrote her column after advertisements began appearing on central London buses directing passers-by to a website that told those who did not accept Christianity that they would suffer for eternity in hell.
Soon after it was published, Worth contacted her asking if he could set up a pledgebank based on her idea, and shortly thereafter, the Atheist Bus Campaign began taking donations, initially hoping to raise 5,500 pounds (6,200 euros, 8,200 dollars).
To date, it has raised upwards of 140,000 pounds, enough to pay for advertisements on 800 buses across Britain -- 200 in central London alone -- along with 1,000 posters in Londons Underground trains and two video screens in a popular Tube station, all for a full month ending in early February.
Unsurprisingly, the campaign has struck a nerve among God-fearing commuters, prompting around 200 complaints to Britains Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which regulates commercials here.
By way of comparison, the most complaints the ASA has ever received over an advert was 1,600.
The watchdog needs just one complaint to investigate an advertisement, which are judged on a variety of factors including harm, offence, taste and deceny as well as factual accuracy, but will wait until next week to decide whether or not to probe the Atheist Bus Campaigns ads.
"A few religious people have complained to the ASA, which seems rather odd, as if they (the ASA) will be able to make a judgment about the evidence on that sort of issue," said Peter Cave, chair of the Humanist Philosophers Group, which advises the British Humanist Association.
Along with opposition in Britain, attempts to engineer a similar campaign in Australia have run into obstacles, with the countrys biggest outdoor advertising agency APN Outdoor deciding to reject a bid by the Atheist Foundation of Australia for ad space.
"Any company really has the right to refuse a service to a customer, but in this instance, you have to wonder," foundation president David Nicholls told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Atheists in Italy and Spain, however, have had more success with their attempts.
Buses with a similar slogan to the Atheist Bus Campaigns message, translated into Catalan, began appearing on two routes in Barcelona on Monday, with plans to extend the campaign to the rest of the country.
In Italy, meanwhile, buses with the slogan "The bad news is that God does not exist. The good news is that we do not need him" will begin traversing the northern Italian city of Genoa on February 4.
Here in Britain, apart from opposition from religious groups, some atheists are unhappy with the inclusion of the word "probably", principally added so that it would adhere to British advertising rules.
Cave, though not in agreeance with the words inclusion, noted that the campaign is trying to make a broader point.
"I can see no evidence for God just as I can see no evidence for pineapples floating around the moon," he said.
"I dont say there probably arent any pineapples floating around the moon, I just say I know there arent any pineapples floating around the moon. But, its a piece of marketing, and I think its good because it makes people think."
